Manhattan does not have many dong bei places. Overall, this place was decent, some of the dishes were better than others.
Good: the pork short rib with chinese pickled cabbage. The soup was flavorful. This was a crowd favorite. I wish they’d add glass noodles to the soup. -sauteed potato green pepper eggplant. The vegetables were cooked to a nice texture and the sauce is very good.
The mid: the Dongbei clear noodles with mixed vegetables. This dish was missing MUSTARD which is a key ingredient. It was also missing shredded egg omelette and cilantro. Other than that the flavor was pretty good. the Signature Harbin style fried pork tenderloin. This had good flavor but the texture was not as crispy as it should have been. Dongbei signature braised pork trotters: this was okay, could have been a little more flavorful and softer. I usually have this dish hot/warm but this was served room temp which made it harder to eat.
The not good: the skewers here were not flavorful at all and all tasted quite gamey. We had both the lamb and beef skewers, and they all tasted like they need more time on the fire, almost like the grill wasn’t hot enough?
I’d come back here in the winter if they bring back blood sausage and the 杀猪菜, which was not on their menu as of...
Read moreFriends mentioned this place and we decided to give it a try. This place looked very different from what our friends told us and we are sure it's the right place. First of all the menu is different. Now all dishes are one a single piece of paper and some dishes are no longer available on the new menu. Second it is run as a place primarily for take-out and online orders, with virtually no service for dine-in. The servers are not familiar with the menu and spend most of time playing with their cellphone. Third, the quality of cooking is far from being qualified as DongBei style. We ordered sweet and sour pork strips, fish with pickled mustard green, and the typical DongBei Da La Pi or potato noodles. The pork is completely off of the standard with too much whole pork fat wrapped in starch. There are only a few pieces of fish on top and the pickled greens are not well mixed with the fish. The Da La Pi tastes mediocre. We had an impression that all dishes are premade or preprepared; and when people order, they only need to quickly reheat or mix. It might be okay as a take-out only place but for dine-in, we would not...
