I kept getting targeted ads for Mosaic Art Studio on Instagram, so I finally went while treating my friend on her birthday. We booked a Wednesday session for a portable lamp, which was $139 per person. The space is lovely with all the lamps and other projects laid out.
The studio sells DIY kits online for $89 for a comparable project. So the question you should ask yourself is is it worth $50 to choose your own beads and have a small cup of tea with one bite-sized treat (which has nuts). They use these exact same kits in the studio. The kits come with video tutorials, which cover the same things the people at the studio covered. It's not like they supported us beyond explaining the steps. Also, the part that has the biggest impact on the look of your project is something you have to do at home. For $139, I would honestly prefer that the studio do it for me and I pick it up at a later date. As you can see from my pictures, my lamp does look very nice lit up. However, when it is not lit, it looks ugly. Also, I ran low on the grout mixture at home, and there was no way for me to get more of it.
Overall, yes, this was a unique and fun experience. I would personally recommend doing a candle holder if you could make use of it, just because it's a smaller project. However, for $139, there needs to be better support to make it seem more like a class or professional support on the grouting so the final product turns out looking better. If you are a crafty person who is willing to splurge, then you...
Read moreI did the water marbling workshop and it was great! I found it through a Google search of water marbling classes in NYC, out of curiosity and was plesantly surprised that Mosaic Art Studio has a space for it! You can make as many prints on paper as you like during the allotted time, and the paper prints take around an hour to dry! It's a very easy process and I struggled with lifting the paper up feom the tray, but I got better as the handa-on practice went on! I came in with no experience but I had color schemes and designs in mind! Lana is a great insteuctor and she's very encouraging and patient! She's very passionate about water marbling and gives great recommendations for peojects outside the class too for those interested in the art! This class is great for beginners who want to get their feet wet in the world of water marbling and take away something nice on the same day! I felt like my pieces weren't coming out that good for the first half of practice, but in the end, the prints were actually quite beautiful once dried! I admire the handcrafted look of the imperfections! Highly recommend...
Read moreThis was the BEST experience. I am not an artistically talented person what-so-ever, but I love to try and do the occasional thing with my friend. We saw this on Instagram and thought it looked fun. IT WAS AMAZING. You're given two and a half hours to make a lamp, and they walk you through the process, even giving you templates for the designs. There are a huge amount of colors of beads and different shapes of tile, and it's like being in an art class in middle school only at the end, you're PROUD of what you made. Throughout the time, they offer you delicious tea and Turkish delight, and the teachers are so lovely and reassuring. Truly, especially for the price, this is one of the coolest things you can do in New York, and I say go before it becomes impossible to snag a spot!! I absolutely plan on going back.
PS - Hot Tip: they also have handmade Turkish goods for sale and I now have gifts for many...
