Downtown Yogurt and Ice Cream was established in Jersey City, NJ in 2014 and opened their second location in Tribeca in 2019. Their main highlight is the self-service froyo and toppings concept. Here at this shop they also feature Philadelphia's Bassett's Ice Cream (since 1861), America's oldest ice cream.
I arrived at the Tribeca location and it was an easy find. Just a short walk from several train lines. Approaching the shop, it clearly stood out from the other establishments on the block. I noticed how aesthetically pleasing the exterior and interior were. Kid-friendly, bright, and a beautiful black and pink interior. They also have an outdoor seating area. The wonderful Paula was behind the counter and greeted me. She briefly explained to me my options. Although I'm an ice cream lover, they serve the oldest ice cream in America, and their selection was really tempting, this was my first time here so I figured it was best to try what they're known for: Froyo! I asked Paula which of the eight flavors are the best and that I should try. She said, "Honestly, I can't answer that because they're all so good." I thanked her for her honesty, grabbed my cup and took a few minutes to decide on the flavors I was feeling at the moment. I went with four of the eight choices: Wild Blackberry, Pineapple Dole Whip, Parisian Tarte, and Cake Batter (they also have tiny sample cups just in case a customer wants to try a flavor). As far as toppings, they have so many to choose from. There were at least thirty. I kept it simple with four choices: fresh pineapple chunks, fresh strawberry slices, and pineapple and strawberry Boba balls. I sat down, got comfortable and dug in. OMG! From the first taste I felt like I was literally in Froyo paradise. The mixture of the Froyo with the toppings was absolutely out of this world. Each flavor packs its own unique punch and the toppings take the Froyo to another level. All four flavors had my tastebuds dancing. Paula was 100% correct and I have no doubt that the other four I didn't try are just as good. This cup of Froyo was perfect for this hot day. I plan to be a regular here...
Read moreI came here on a Friday afternoon.
Their flavors were Vegan Almond, Pineapple Dole Whip, Parisian Tart, Strawberry Blossom, Cake Batter, Cookies & Cream, Classic Vanilla, Chocolate Truffle.
I was told their regular flavors are the same frozen yogurt as 40 Carrots. I believe the two that are not were the Vegan Almond and the Pineapple Dole Whip.
They also serve Bassett’s Ice Cream, which is apparently America’s oldest ice cream. Pretty cool.
The price is $0.77 / ounce. This is the most expensive price I’ve seen for frozen yogurt in the city. 16 Handles’ price is $0.72 / ounce. Menchie’s is $0.63 / ounce.
If there’s not a lot of competition for frozen yogurt in this area, maybe that price will work.
There is a rewards system that you can sign up for if you plan on being a frequent froyo’er.
This is a great spot for kids. There is a humongous TV playing cartoons, for kids to watch and adults...
