New York is, in a lot of ways, not an eater's town. There's a whole lot of upscale dining if you have deep pockets, a decent enough amount of street food, an astonishing amount of bad midrange stuff, and very little in-between. Good solid places where you can sit down, have a meal where everything is excellent, and walk out satisfied for under a hundred bucks are thin on the ground and the act of wading through all the mid crap means it's hard to stumble onto one without suffering through a lot of forgettable (at best) meals first.
Good Thanks is that rarest of critters: the perfect midpriced restaurant. All the food is excellent, the cocktails are lovely and balanced, they take their coffee game seriously in ways a lot of sit-down cafe-type places tend to neglect (God bless Australia), and you can get a solid brunch or dinner without doing too much damage to your bank account. This neighborhood in particular has been screaming for a joint to fill that niche. After the overpriced ten-year plus reign of Concord Hill in the same space, an inexplicably popular restaurant where I had three of the worst meals of my life, Good Thanks feels like a blessing from the culinary gods. Go for the $10.00 happy hour, get the shrimp bun and a glass of wine, sit out front and watch the neighborhood dogs go by, and then come back for the brunch. Places like this are rare and...
Read moreGood Thanks caught my attention because of their stunning tornado scrambled egg. Their brunch menu looks simple but every recipe is carefully curated. Their servers were nice but a bit pushy.
*Kimchi Scramble w/ Salmon A unique fusion dish to shake up your Australian brunch classic. As a kimchi lover, I make kimchi scramble egg at home sometimes but it becomes watery easily. I was glad to see they master this dish tremendously well, bundled into a beautiful twist. Even if you are not a salad person, you will get obsessed with their well seasoned arugula and pickled cabbage. The toasted sourdough had a crunchy crust and a soft center. I’d recommend pairing the dish with avocado as the salmon was quite salty.
* Avocado Toast w/ Scramble Egg This is not as insta-worthy as Kimchi Scramble but I like all the details they put together in this classic brunch choice. The omelette was perfectly swirled with a velvety smooth texture. Zaatar, cucumber and feta added extra layers of flavors to the creamy avocados.
* Shrimp Sandwich Love the fried shrimp patty - it has the springy texture of chopped shrimps and a crunchy panko breading. It ignited a harmonious spark to the sesame bun with garlic herb aioli, shredded lettuce...

This places used to be one of my favorite spots for brunch. I’ve been here many times and always loved the food, coffee, and the overall vibe. Unfortunately, today’s experience was a huge letdown. When we arrived, a female server came to drop off the menus without saying a single word—no greeting, no smile, not even a reply when we said hi. Her attitude felt cold and unwelcoming, and it immediately changed the atmosphere. We were so put off by the interaction that we decided to leave without ordering.
I really hope this was just an off day, but it was disappointing enough to make me reconsider coming back anytime soon. A little warmth and basic courtesy go a long way—especially in hospitality.
Had brunch at Good Thanks in Williamsburg — we got the avocado toast with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, plus a cortado. The food was excellent!!! the bread was especially good, and the portion size was generous, which helps justify the price (we paid around $80 before tip).
That said, I do wish the service felt a...
