What a rare gem in midtown!
There seems to be only 3 types of places in midtown these days. An overpriced franchise outlet for tourists, a grab and go breakfast and lunch for working folks, or a gilded box for business account holders.
Heritage Grand breaks the mold. So many good things to tell you. First the space. It’s warm and elegant with clean organic lines- subtly Mediterranean. Rounded ovens for the pizzas towards the front and an open kitchen in the back make for a more casual and lively ambiance. In fact the little passageway connecting the restaurant to their bakery next door is also where their bread is made. The wall of windows allows you a peek into the magic of their bread making.
You will also appreciated that despite a full dining room, you can still hear your companions during conversation. Feel free to take selfies as the lighting somehow makes everyone look lovelier, yet no one needed a flashlight to see the menu.
Service was perfectly attentive without being intrusive, and atypically quick. Our server was very glad to offer suggestions and knew the entire menu well. Never rushed, never bothered, the staff were professional, made us feel very welcomed and cared for.
Now onto the food. We were a party of 6 and shared a lot of dishes including dessert. Nothing was overly seasoned, over dressed, over cooked or overly sweet. Portion sizes are very generous for NYC prices.
For appetizers we tried almost all of them. Foie gras stands out because it was umami heaven yet light on the tongue. Deviled eggs- have to give thanks to the server's suggestion because who orders deviled eggs in a restaurant? My party was all so glad we did and were embarrassed to split the last one four ways. It was that good. Hamachi crudo was delicate and perfect with a sprinkling of cracked coriander. The basket of house made breads was quickly and quietly devoured during the apps.
If you like thin crust pizza, try theirs because it’s ultra thin,- chewy and deliriously smoky from those cavernous wood burning ovens. Clams and linguini had us all soaking our bread to get every last drop of the broth. And the pasta is perfection. Main reason their breads, pizza crust and pastas deserve 5 stars I think, is their use of ancient grains that are milled daily in house. The doughs are also allowed to rise more naturally and slowly. Our server was peppered with more questions but I was too focused on what I was tasting.
For mains, salmon and branzino, both generous portions with a seared crust, cooked to perfection. The salmon was laid over an interesting pesto; interesting in a very good way! Branzino was lightly charred and had a lovely wood fired aroma. Tunisian chicken was surprisingly good! I don’t usually order chicken because it's what I make most often at home. But our server's suggestion was spot on. Its roasted skin had a seasoning that reminded me of the best parts of tunisian hummus. Harissa maybe? So yummy with a hint of tang and heat.
I think we shared all six desserts on the menus. Olive oil cake was my favorite. Ok I’ve already written too much! When I go again, I’ll write more about dessert.
Be sure to check out the bakery. I was sad we couldn’t order pastries from there but my waistline is grateful. Can’t...
Read moreMy family and I had the pleasure of dining at Heritage Grand Bakery Restaurant & Pizza Bar last night and we were delighted. Everything about our dining experience was top notch: from the fine quality of the food, to the fantastic customer service, and the warm ambiance.
We ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer and it was cooked perfectly: tender and extremely tasty with the addition of smashed roasted fingerling potatoes, roasted onion, fresh green olives, and salsa verde which was bursting with flavor. A definite hit! We also ordered the Orecchiette with fennel sausage, sauteed broccolini, white wine, garlic, and EVOO, as well as the Spaghetti al Limone with lemon, garlic, butter, parmigiano, and lemon zest. Both are excellent pasta dishes too. We had two pizzas: the thin crust Prosciutto Arugula pizza with prosciutto, arugula, fior di latte, parmigiano, and balsamic glaze and the Neapolitan eggplant pizza with fresh tomato sauce, eggplants, fresh mozzarella, and walnuts. Both pizzas were amazing! We were all very pleased with our dishes and agreed that we would definitely order them again. The customer service was impeccable too. The host who greeted us was welcoming and very efficient: we were seated really quickly. Our server, Nana, was friendly, informative, extremely attentive and responsive, but not overbearing in any way. She answered all our questions patiently, asked us if we had any allergies, and even took the time to explain to us that the restaurant imports the wheat for their baked products (breads, pizzas, pasta, etc) from France and that they mill the grains in house. Impressive! Even the young gentleman who was in charge of refilling our glasses of water was amazing! Last, but not least, the location of the restaurant (in close proximity to Bryant Park and 5th Ave) and its atmosphere are both great. An overall five-star dining experience! Highly recommended if you are looking for high-quality delicious artisanal food served by attentive staff in a warm and...
Read moreI am not known for leaving this type of reviews, but in this particular one I have to tell you about a situation that happened to me twice out of the only 3 times I visited this place,
The first time I visited this place I went alone to eat on my lunch break and the restaurant was completely empty, it took 45 minutes to serve me a simple burger that I had ordered and the guy who served me was not in a good mood at all, and nor did he bother to attend to his only table. When the food arrived he didn't even tell me to apologize for the delay, much less anything else.
I decided to give this restaurant one more chance and visited it a second time, in which I ordered the same burger that I had already ordered the first time and from which I had removed the vegetables, so it was a simple cheeseburger, meat and bread. When the food arrives at the table, the burger did not have any cheese and when I tell the waitress what happened to the cheese? The girl answered me in a very bad voice “that burger doesn't have cheese” to which I knew it was a lie because I had already ordered it the first time.
The girl takes my plate to the kitchen and the kitchen tells her that the cheese that that burger usually comes with is not available and I myself had to give her the solution of putting any other type of cheese on it, because it is not available. The light bulb came on to be able to offer me a solution as a client.
Given this, I went again a third time with some friends and the same Argentinian girl who was going to serve us tonight, when she saw me she decided to give the table to one of her colleagues, and let me tell you, this waiter did a wonderful job, the Service was very on par with what the restaurant wants and offers; but all this was overshadowed by the bad attitude of this girl again.
Definitely if you want to be treated very badly, I recommend you go to this place, even though the food is very good, the service they have...
