Jade Island gets this year's award for outrageous price gouging. Their insanely stratospheric prices: $25.50 for Beef with Garlic Sauce; $24.25 for Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, are representative of the opportunistic, greed-driven price increases one sees across the restaurant board.

The food is pretty good, but there are countless other Chinese restaurants with similar menus making less overpriced food that is no worse than what comes of of Jade Palace's kitchen.

The fact is that the wholesale prices for the common, mid-quality ingredients that are found in every dish prepared by virtually every Chinese restaurant have not doubled or tripled in price. But those dishes are now commonly priced that way.

It's unfortunate that so many restaurants that don't rely on rare ingredients have taken the "inflation" news wind and raised prices that are keeping me away.

When compared to the prices at Shun Lee Palace, located at 55th Street and Third Avenue in Manhattan, generally acknowledged as New York's most expensive Chinese restaurant, Jade Island is now charging about 2/3 of Shun Lee's prices on virtually everything.

Shun Lee is a white tablecloth restaurant with a formally attired wait staff located in midtown Manhattan that has been open for 50+ years.

Jade Island is none of that.

These money grabs are not confined to Jade Island, but it is one of the more egregious offenders. Staten Island's isolation and lack of restaurant competition s part of this, uninformed customers who will simply pay without question is another part.

We are already seeing reactive discounts spurred on by price resistance to fast food item prices and other restaurant offerings.

I'll be surprised if Jade Island doesn't react to consumer sentiment in...

This is an old school Chinese restaurant, one of the last places left where the atmosphere brings me back to being a kid in the 80’s when eating out Chinese was the best. But this time we ordered for pick up. I ordered online, and the food was ready quick.. I was greeted by a super friendly host as soon as I walked in. The food was great! It was funny because even though we didn’t get to enjoy the ambience eating there, I felt like I had a ā€˜vintage’ chinese take out experience.. the wonton soup had a bunch of pork in it and the green leafy veg - not sure if it is bok choy, but this is what wonton soup used to look like years ago and most places don’t serve like that anymore. Also I got a big bag of really good fried noodles and a nice size container of duck sauce which was so good and a nice change from the little packets places usually give. They also included a little packet that had the typical soy sauce, wonton cookies and surprisingly… tea bags, which really solidified the nostalgia for some reason... The other food we got was roast pork lo mein - was delicious and the fried pork wontons were great.. they had so much flavor. Overall a great experience at Jade Island for take out.. definitely want to eat in soon to enjoy the vintage nostalgia but I appreciated the little touches they add in...

Oh fun! The place is marvelously kitchie...tiki bar meets old style chinese restaurant. I loved it. None of us had tiki cocktails but they looked fabulous. It's been quite some time since I was offered fried noodles to dip in sweet and sour sauce or chinese mustard...and I do honestly love that mustard. Hubbs prefers the sweet one so no arguing ensues. I had wonton soup...think back to the first times you had it...that's how it was...yum. They shared really good hot and sour soup which they liked from the first bite but more and more as it got hotter at the bottom. Ok the food...three of us at dinner and we had General's Chicken ...deep sweet and hot sauce, chicken done well, and steamed broccoli,. Overall very nice. Garlic Scallops...a dark and tangy sauce, onion carrot and green peppers and lots of good sized scallops...a success but I'm told maybe too many green peppers for someone not a fan. Finally Fuji Duck...I loved it! Sauce full of onion and bean sprouts and the small bits of duck over crispy skin and breast of the duck. The service was quick and friendly..no complaints there. Not a cheap meal but not expensive either. Taken together a great meal with lots to...

What they severly lack in flavor they attempt to make up for in portion size but dont be fooled. The food was completely dry and tatseless. I ordered a spare rib tips with and sesame chicken both with pork fried rice and a side order of chicken wings. I still don't understand how my order came to over 50 dollars for two plates and wings. The chicken wings are listed as an 8 piece, but what I got instead was four wings chopped. Infuriating ! Plus, they give you egg rolls with your platter but fail to mention that they have shrimp in them. Thankfully, I tried it first because my husband is allergic. I asked over the phone if the spare ribs have the red sauce, and the implication was that the plate combo I ordered came with it. I received two sauces on the side, both of which I did not ask for nor know what they are. Plus, it didn't make sense to get two soy sauce packages for two large plates of food. Needless to say, I won't order here again. Very upsetting and highly dissatisfied. This seems like a place you can only get trashed at because a majority of the 5 start reviews are from people who have had drinks. Kinda low if you have to attract customers by getting the inebriated.
