Jauja Mexican Kitchen — Restaurant in New York

We’ve been pretty big fans for a long time as they are always so quick and the food is good, but this time I’m so sorely disappointed. We ordered our food on the phone around 10 minutes before arriving. When we arrived and were told it was not ready. We waited in the restaurant for a solid 30 minutes— watched people who placed their order on the spot get their food before us and waited until the entire place cleared out with still no word from the person up front as to whether or not our food was ready. We were the only ones in the restaurant except for a delivery worker. Finally the owner asked us what we ordered, we clarified and as soon as the owner walked into the kitchen to check on the situation the person up front called out our order. Nothing came out of the kitchen so it seems that the person up front had it the whole time just forgot even though we were in their line of vision the whole time. By the time we got our food it was 40 minutes past — probably would’ve received it faster by just ordering delivery. Food is cold and soggy now...

Food is incredibly mediocre. They use mozzarella cheese in the burrito, which tells you everything you need to know. I ordered a tostada with avocado and got served a packaged tostada chip with bland beans, lettuce, and 2 slices of avocado on top. When I went up to ask for more, they charged me $2 extra, bringing a meatless tostada to $7.50 total. The rice lacks flavor and they use too many onions in their pico de gallo. They’re also sparse in adding real Mexican cheese or crema to your food, which is a real shame. Very nice staff. Quick service for pickup. Burrito was amazing. Surprisingly wet because if the lettuce juice that seeped under it, but somehow that still didn’t ruin it.

Nachos were great. Just wish the chips were much more fresh. They were a bit stale.

Still... This is overall the best Mexican food that I have tried in the neighborhood.

The guy working there said they are still working on the full menu.... All I can say is that if they add churros and breakfast burritos to the equation they are going to have a regular customer from me...
