This is a good bar that I’ve been periodically going into for about 5 years. The food is good and prices are reasonable. It’s a good bar but I wish it was a great bar. It just doesn’t seem to be able to get to that point. I actually like this bar more on Sundays thru Thursdays. One of the strange things about this bar is some of the bartenders. The owner, Martin, is genuinely a nice guy and his two daughters also bartend there - they are both nice women. But it does seem that there are a few male bartenders that just come across as though they own the place. It’s hard to describe but their body language really gives that vibe. Consistently. There’s a relatively new bartender there, Sabrina, who is an experienced bartender but some of the guys - I think his name is Dave - constantly are in her section and it seems as though there’s no reason for that. It’s just odd. For example, Sabrina gives me my bill and the moment I sign it and put the pen down, the male bartender will abruptly come and take it. Why would a different bartender take a signed bill that is from another bartender and her register? Doesn’t seem to make sense. That may seem like it’s not a big deal but it’s just one example and the body language of some of the bartenders is just strange. Aside from that, I try and avoid Friday and Saturday nights because it’s simply a zoo with MANY immature NYU college students. I went to NYU myself, a while back. But it’s not as though there are just a few immature college students - literally the entire place winds up being a kindergarten. The pool tables attract the college students but they don’t know how to act. Especially the guys. I’ve seen two fights break out over the last 2 years. I’m a bit older now and that’s two fights too many. There should be no fights. There are at least 2 bouncers there on weekends - it’s not the biggest bar - but unfortunately, it looks like they...
Read moreMy wife and I recently found ourselves seeking shelter from the hustle and bustle of New York City and ended up at Josie Woods Pub.
It turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. As soon as we stepped in, we were warmly greeted by Megan, an incredibly attentive barmaid. Her knowledge of IPAs was impressive—she guided me through several options, showcasing why America is known for its exceptional IPA beers. She also offered invaluable tips on the best sights and sounds to experience around the city.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Martin, the owner. Despite being in New York for over 40 years, he still carries his charming Irish accent. He was incredibly approachable and easygoing, adding to the welcoming atmosphere of the pub.
The ambiance of Josie Woods Pub was exactly what I envisioned an American bar to be. The decor, music, and layout all contribute to a space that feels authentic and inviting. It's clear that this is a spot loved by locals, but it's also a perfect refuge for tourists like us. There are no gimmicks here—just great drinks, friendly faces, and a genuine American pub experience.
If you find yourself in NYC, Josie Woods Pub is definitely...
