Jus Fishy and beyond — Restaurant in New York

I don’t get to Flatbush very often, but when I do, I want to eat this kind of food. We were going to King’s theater so we stopped here before the show. My kingfish was fried to perfection, served over cornmeal pudding (coo coo calloo), with a green veggie sauce. Plenty of delicious Scotch bonnet sauce. My husband had the bbq lamb with beans and pumpkin, all delicious but the sides really stood out. Solid island flavors prepared with heart.

On service: the young man supposed to be table side is wasted resources. We asked about the “punches” like “peanut punch,” and he totally flubbed the answer. He got our order wrong, but this other lady, apparently the cook, out to check on us and confirm the order. She ended up bringing the food out from the kitchen, and then plates, and then forks, and then our sauces, all while the young man was outside smoking a joint, the cannabis dank blowing into the dining room. Brah are you on break or what? This your auntie or something, you get her to do all the work? Wow. I chatted with the lady after about frying fish, and she was very modest and kind. So I wanted to try this restaurant after seeing some of the food which look delicious and also most other restaurants I've tried normally have the same menu. The one thing I like about this restaurant is the variety. I ordered steam snapper with lo mein and fried rice. What I received seem to be raw fish, vegetable rice, and lo mein all in which was bland. This is the second or third time in my life where I tasted food so terrible that I wanted to throw it away. The fish had no taste, no or little season and I can just taste how rank it is. Its late at night so I can't go and get anything but I'll try my best to recook the disaster of a fish. Also I have never seen white fried rice in my life (vegetable rice). This vegetable rice look like they cook white rice and just throw some vegetables in it. As a carribean person the favorite part of the fish for me is the head but to be honest just looking at it freaks me out and its not appetizing. We were a little unsure not sure what to expect. I felt like having fish broth during the day not knowing this is a dish on the menu. OMG!! Delicious!! 😋. The fish broth taste like home cooked I had the whole large container at the same time. I could not resist… not just the fish broth but the king fish & fries, shark & fries was amazing!! Can’t wait to go again. I seldom write reviews but I could not pass on this place. In addition, very family oriented place where everyone of the staff made sure we were taken care of.
