First of all, I have been to the old location (next door to the current location) for over 20 years, from about 1989 until whatever year it originally closed. Probably went over 1000 times back in the day and was a loyal customer. Yes, this is authentic Mexican food but it is not the same chef. Unlike in previous years before it closed, the chips are not crunchy and are very greasy now. The rice is overcooked. The beans are mealy. The burrito was huge, the side orders of rice were tiny. In comparison, where I moved in the Upper East Side, at Red Grill on 88th and 2nd, I can now get a side order of rice that is 3 or 4 times the size of the taqueria's for the SAME PRICE. The burritos now are bland-tasting and wet or soggy inside. They are using the same ingredients, but this is not the same quality as the 90's, 2000's and following decade. I am convinced they are using a different chef. The side orders of rice now have peas in them, which I found odd. Please support this business, they are great people, but this is a far cry in quality from the old Taqueria that was originally next door (before it originally closed). It is authentic Mexican but the food is either bland-tasting, overcooked, too greasy, etc. compared to the old Taqueria (same owners i believe). Please support them but realize this place is not what it was in quality before it re-opened. For Mexican in Park Slope, instead, I would recommend Maya Taqueria but ONLY the one on 5th avenue and Lincoln, which has the best quality (I tried the other 2 Maya Taquerias). End of an era when this place originally closed (and-or moved to Prospect Heights location originally). Please still support them but...
Read moreThis was very disappointing. I brought a friend visiting from out of town to try it, and was embarassed tbh. 3 tacos cost $23 and the tortillas themselves were the best part. The al pastor toppings were fridge cold. Felt like the pineapple had been cut ages ago and let sit so it was cold and slimy. On top of meat that isn't exactly hot when plated either, not pleasant. I usually love the pineapple in al pastor but this was a huge miss. The special, fish taco - it was not fried and needed way more time on the grill or under the salamander. Most of it was room temp. Only the one tiny part that was charred and crispy was good. The dry rub seasoning was extremely meh, if fish is seasoned that aggressively then it needs char and crisp. The slaw was unpleasant and bland, also too wet with flavorless pico. I love slaw usually, and couldn't finish it. For something that takes 10-15min, as the fish is cooked to order, it should have been much better. Happy to wait and pay money for good tacos but this was so not worth it. Tortillas were clearly freshly made and great in themselves but for the large amount of meat given, it needs 2 tortillas per taco. Service was bad - there was no one in line ahead of us and yet my friend and I stood at the counter for 5 min before anyone even looked up or acknowledged us. The cashier entered in a (more expensive) steak taco instead of the al pastor i had just told her, and when I pointed it out she barely acknowledged her mistake. My friend ordered a soda and it was immediately forgotten about despite the drinks being right behind the...
Read moreMy husband and I worked up the nerve to take our two children-under-two out for dinner here last night for our oldest child's second birthday. Without getting too long-winded, the food was delicious and served quickly, and the staff were true champions and absolutely the kindest, most delightful humans.
Parents know that it's really stressful trying to enjoy yourself as an adult in public with tiny kids. The staff helped us situate two high chairs, brought us food quickly, served it in an expert way where no kid could reach anything they weren't supposed to, and even happily offered to have us dock our giant stroller next to the register. At the end of the meal, my husband and I were making one last sweep to clean up stray table and floor bits from the kids, and my husband accidentally spilled his entire frozen margarita on the floor (awesome). Again, the whole staff was outstandingly chill and graceful about it. From the two (I assume) owner/managers to the ladies and gentlemen front and back of house, every single person was relaxed and smiling, making us feel at ease.
We will likely be picking up from here for a while until we get the courage to venture out again, but seriously, we'll be back again and again to La Taq to support good food and great people. Thanks y'all! We...
