UPDATE II 2023: They just reinstated mask requirements for two days a week (in November. In 2023...I know) after a tiny fraction of the coop voted in a little-attended general meeting.
UPDATE: 2023 The coop has gone seriously down hill. Utterly disorganized, one can never find a shift to work nor an available recurring shift. The grace period extensions are gone and too many of the full time employees are borderline sociopathic. One cashier at all times so there are epic lines and if you stop in for one item, you now have to wait on the 20 minute “express” line. It’s like they read a book on effective retail management and decided to do the exact opposite. Its prices have risen so much like everywhere else that it’s no longer a good deal. Damn, Covid really wrecked this jewel.
An anomaly of quality, community, sustainability AND value in a world of blech. No one can touch the quality of Park Slope Food Co-op--not Whole Foods, not Fairway, not Trader Joe's. Yes, you work 2.5 hours a month but with fun people and the food and mission are totally worth it. I love the PSFC.
UPDATE: Still love it! Even more in Covid. They were on it before anyone else in terms of safety, resourcefulness when other stores were running out of things and constantly flexing hours and policies to meet the fast changing virus and needs of the community. This place is not for everyone--you have to love the mission for it to be worth it--but for me it...
Read moreI have been a co-op member for 10 years and have consistently observed a lack of basic human decency from many members. Simple tasks, like returning grocery baskets after use, are often ignored, which reflects a troubling sense of entitlement. This behavior is particularly prevalent among the co-op’s predominantly yt membership and speaks to a broader issue of disregard for shared spaces and community values. It’s disappointing to see this in a space meant to foster cooperation and mutual respect. I believe it’s important to address these patterns to create a more accountable and equitable environment for all members.
While the value of the products offered is great and there are some members who do their best to be respectful, this space can be emotionally taxing to navigate, in light of the aforesaid concerns and with the work requirement (every 6 weeks). I appreciate the Coop staff and members who are welcoming and the Coop's attempts to address some of these issues. I hope that the Coop as a whole can continue to evolve...
Read moreCannot say enough about this gem of a place. Truly has changed our lives and the way we shop and cook. When my fiancé and I first joined some years back, we wondered whether we’d be able to get all our shopping done here and if we would need to supplement with other grocery store and bodega visits—that never became necessary. The PSFC has absolutely everything and many interesting and truly unique gourmet items. I love the seasonality of the produce carried and genuinely look forward to the change of seasons as it makes you appreciate everything more. It makes them more special. At first we were also worried about the time commitment to work and stay active as members, but that proved to be no issue and quite enjoyable and rewarding in its own way. We’ve loved the people we’ve met, as it is quite the community, and applaud the coop for how they’ve handled Covid-19. Such a special place, with caring people and we are just so happy to be a part...
