I took some time to think about our experience before posting, especially because this place has so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, our visit fell short of what we expected.
My husband and I travel often and have done many escape rooms, so we have a good sense of what a well-run room feels like. Our game master was polite, but it seemed like the room wasn’t fully prepared when we arrived. The intro felt rushed and a bit hard to understand, which set an odd tone from the start. My husband and I literally looked at each other when we walked in like, “What happened? How are we supposed to communicate with her?”
We played the Bird Room. Visually, it was beautiful, and a few puzzles were genuinely creative. However, several standard escape room rules were broken. Without giving away specifics:
-Climbing on props was unexpectedly required -Drawers had to be re-checked multiple times -Some clues were too dark or nearly the same color, making things feel tedious rather than clever -We were told clues would only be used once, but that wasn’t actually true
We also noticed that we were able to move forward even though we hadn’t solved certain parts in the right order, which made us suspect the game was being manually advanced by staff. We don’t mind if the game is manually advanced, but it was odd getting the next clue before we had even finished solving the current one.
The AI-generated art was also a bit distracting. Another small thing (and personal personal preference) , but it did take away from the immersion.
To be fair, the ending was great and probably the highlight of the entire experience.
Overall, there were things to like, but the execution didn’t match the high expectations set by the glowing reviews.
tldr; If this is your first escape room or you’re already nearby, you’ll probably still have fun. But for people who travel specifically for escape rooms or have some experience with escape room, I would...
Read moreThe NYC-area escape room scene is surprisingly lackluster compared to other major cities that have thriving entertainment industries. But MyssTic definitely stands out as a must-do room in the area.
To start out with, our group of four was traveling from all across the country to meet in the city to do several rooms, and we could only fit in MyssTic at the end of a long day. We emailed ahead of time and asked if they could add an additional time slot so we could play both rooms and they were more than happy to acommodate us and even gave a discount for booking both rooms. This is certainly not expected so we truly appreciate them going above and beyond for us! I can only imagine our GM was ready to get out of there by the time we finished a little after midnight but they were happy to indulge us with group photos, questions, and let us explore the rooms a bit more after we finished. An excellent customer service experience. The rooms themselves were extremely solid with some fun surprises along the way.
Montauk Project, which leans into Stranger Things territory, was just a blast with an exciting finale. A few of the puzzles contained a more physical aspect, which is always a nice change of pace.
Ghost Light was simply a beautiful looking game. Elegant is not a word I'd use to describe most escape games but this one earns it. The lighting design was immaculate and really nailed the other-wordly vibe. Although this is a ghost story of sorts, it is not scary, more endearing and ethereal. It was a pleasure to explore this environment.
Overall MyssTic is easy to recommend to newcomers and...
Read moreI am visiting New York with family, and I have done 152 rooms. A few friends recommended me to check this place out if I am in the area. Finally I sneaked out when my family is tired and resting at the hotel after a long day walk. I picked the ghost light, which it’s a must-do according to my friends.
First, the customer service is wonderful. They were flexible about last minute booking. Then we were greeted by friendly GM, Spencer. Secondly, the game is so fun. Many wow moment, and the game is filled with a variety of different puzzles. Especially there are a couple of puzzles just well designed and beautifully done. Last and the most importantly about doing an escape room is the GM. Special thanks to our GM, Spencer, he did a great job monitoring our game. Even thought I have 152 rooms under my belly, I ain’t the brightest player. I often miss clues here and there. Thank Spencer for paying attention to our game and offered little nudges so we don’t waste time to complete our mission. Once you play a handful escape room, you will notice a bad GM can ruin a great game; a good GM can make a mediocre game great. Myss tic offers both great game and GM.
If you are new to escape room, don’t hesitate to try rooms here. Maybe start from ghost light because it’s an easier room based on the rating. It’s a great room. If you are an escape room enthusiast and want to play one in NYC area, make sure to check this place out as well. You will have a wonderful time.
Thank you Myss tic rooms again. I cannot wait to come back to try another room and the new room you are going to offer...
