I'm not sure how some people can say this place is over-priced. Most lobster rolls available on LI, for example, are in the low twenty dollar range and one of the most famous (and over-rated) locations enroute to Montauk hovers around $30. THAT is overpriced. (Owners - keep the prices in-check and customers will keep returning). But back to Luke's...I will recommend that anyone eating here should be a purists, as that is the style of Luke's rolls. I was impressed at how full of large, chunky meat these rolls were. No minced-mystery bits. Not overdressed. No globs of mayo, celery, etc. Just simple lobster with a touch of butter and a very light dressing. And super fresh. Being in the location that it is, I was expecting large, unmanaged crowds but to my surprise, it was run very organized and the service was very fast (early lunch about 12 noon on July 4th). They hand out beepers and no sooner did I get to the table, it rang. I went to the window and was handed a nicely packaged and bagged order (no greasy, disgusting trays like most other self-service eateries). By the time we left, the small outdoor seating area was full. Now...I would never expect a lobster roll to fill me up but this is a food in which you should prefer quality not quantity. I think most people may be used to rolls with a lot of filler that may be larger. This was all about quality. I had the Trio sampler consisting of a half-sized shrimp roll, crab roll and lobster roll. My wife had a full lobster roll. Yes, my 3 rolls were small but they were well-stuffed and I liked being able to taste each type. Since we don't indulge in this very often, we decided to splurge a bit - so I went back to the window before leaving for another roll to share with my wife. Coupled with a cold beer on a wickedly hot day, I came away comfortably filled and taste buds thoroughly satisfied. I will...
Read moreEXCELLENT lobster rolls, great location, but very RUDE and hapless staff! I ordered a lobster roll and a crab roll with my girlfriend for takeout - the first time, everything went smoothly and we were on our way. The lobster roll was so good that I returned for a sampler, but was told rather bluntly that I could not pay with my card because something is wrong with their payment terminal. I was told to withdraw money next door. Due to huge commissions, I did not want to do that, so I asked for another lobster roll instead and asked again if maybe I could pay with my card. This time, the man who took my order looked at the machine and said (rather reluctantly) that I could - very strange… Half an hour goes by and I return to buy a beer, but the same man tells me “sorry we are closing in 15 minutes, I can’t sell you beer”. What gives? There was a couple waiting in line behind me and he seemed to serve them just fine. I suspect that the treatment I got is the result of me not having tipped when ordering the first time. Shame! There is no expectation to tip when ordering takeout.
EDIT: thank you Tracy for your reply. I will increase my rating by a star for your handling of the situation! Can’t award more for the food, as it’s already the best lobster roll I have ever had :)) (love the...
Read moreIn all honesty I don't get the five star ratings. Sure: their stuff is fresh, I give it that. Apart from that, it is ridiculously overpriced, UNLESS they are really serious about the sustainability thing. Then it would still be pricey, but I'd forgive the blandness - the boring to non-existent seasoning - and the lack of interesting sauces. I hear the seafood is supposed to be "the star here" - alright, then your stars are just too introvert for my taste buds. I had a mix of lobster, crab and shrimp "rolls" , each of which came down to three bites. 9 bites for 20 bucks plus tip - ouch. With all the over the moon critics around here I had seriously expected something more memorable. Lemon butter on cold seafood? Not really a unique selling point in my book. As a European, I will never get how Muricans call soft, white, sweetened dough-stuff a "roll" or even "bread", but - alas - anything more serious than that American "bread" would have overrun the taste of the seefood anyway. I had forgotten about their food as soon as the last bite hit my stomach. So this is "New York's best lobster roll"?...
