There's about a half dozen pizza spots within a few blocks of each other in the Gramercy / NoMad area, specifically up & down 3rd Ave.
Some are a bit more extravagant, some are a bit more experimental, and some are undeniably essential. Lunetta's is the latter and, for my money, the best in the neighborhood that I've tried so far.
A simple cheese slice is $3 out the door and the perfect balance of sauce (neither too sweet nor too earthy), cheese (the preferred amount to yield a veritable cheese-pull without overloading you with grease), and crust (non-greasy, holds it's shape while bending to the whim of the toppings at just the right time like a delicious dance, and offering a solid chew and texture). This is, in it's most essential form, the epitome of great New York Pizza.
The meat lovers is rich and warm, with the bacon rounding out the brightness of the sausage and punchiness of the pepperoni. It's not too heavy but welcomes you back 'for just one more slice' without any regret. This pie is particularly tasty and an absolute steal at $23 for an XL. This pie has potential to become everyone's 'usual'.
The white pizza is reliable, a calm companion when you're not feeling a red-sauce-slice, but, admittedly, could use... something; whether more ricotta globs populating the surface or a tangy element such as a more robust olive oil at the heart of the pie. It's just quite as definitive as other white slices I've had in the city, it doesn't quite hold its own as a meal and you'd definitely want a secondary slice to go with it. This is a still a good - if nothing special - piece of pizza, through and through.
The best part of Lunetta's is that they're open later than the competition just down the street.
There's a lot of good pizza in New York and there's a lot of great pizza. I don't know if you can find "the best", although you can certainly keep looking. But when you just need a pizza that makes you feel like you're in New York City, when you just need a slice that satisfies the most instinctual urge of hot, cheap, tasty food - whether you're sober or attempting to sober up - you can never go wrong with the essentials, and Lunetta's offers...
Read moreIf you want to order food and never receive it this is the place to order from! I mean who doesn't want to spend $30 on food and never get it? The best part of the experience is when you call they don't even answer the phone. I ordered from delivery.com and the delivery time was 30-40min, in the confirmation email it said 75-90min which means someone at the restaurant confirmed the order and said it would take longer, they didn't answer the phone when I attempted to call numerous times, their website had them listed as open for another 30min, I waited the 90min hoping that food might arrive, it did not. Thanks so much guys. BTW delivery.com customer service apparently isn't 24hrs. All around AWFUL experience.
UPDATE 4/26/22
I decided to try this place again because it was open and I figured lightning doesn't strike twice... I ordered from them on seamless, I can't believe that again, the food never came and they don't answer the phone at all. DON'T TAKE ORDERS AND LET HUNGRY PEOPLE WAIT FOR FOOD THAT'S NOT COMING. I really really can't believe they did it again. NO MORE CHANCES, I'm sure it doesn't matter to them but if you're hungry DON'T ORDER...
Read moreLunetta Pizza is located in my neighborhood and I have been a frequent customer. Margherita pizza and the Inside Out pizzas are my special favorites. What is an Inside Out Pizza? Here the cheese is st the bottom and then the tomato sauce is on top. Three types of cheeses are placed here: mozzarella, provolone and Parmesan. With so many one could imagine it being rich? Far from it. Each square slice is so tasty that I often wish I could order two but that would cost too much money. Service here is friendly and all the servers know me and always cut my slices into small pieces which started during Covid. I cannot walk outside holding a slice and hoping it won’t fall on my clothes. Cutting it small made it easier to eat and now when I eat here I always use a knife and fork. New Yorkers will scratch their heads about this but it’s the way I like it. Tables are clean and salads and cheesecake slices are also available. A clean unisex restroom is at the back. One can pay with burg cash and a card. Lots of customers come here and a lot of large pies...
