Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant is nicely lit and welcoming with their décor. Service (5/5): We tried to squeeze into an earlier slot from the 8:30p but now knowing that the space is pretty tiny, our table would not be available until the designated res, so understandable. I thought the service was exceptional for group parties –they offered the option to get an additional spring roll and also cut up our Bahn Mi into fourths. Cocktails: The cocktails come in very cool cups and mine (Mr.Mom) was actually lit on fire!! Not a huge fan on Mr.Mom in terms of flavor but it was fun to get. Salt & Pepper Squid (5/5): This was one of my fav dishes of the evening—the breading was light but flavorful, was NOT overcooked that the pieces are chewy, and loved the small kick that it had. Spring Rolls (4/5): Nothing to write home about but was still tasty. We were able to add another for an extra. Chicken Banh Mi (N/A): We had our sandwich cut into fourths to share with the table. It turns out that me and another sharer missed out on a pate which had the sauce/flavoring. Until they said something, I thought the sandwich was very meh but I can’t rate it without the crucial ingredients! Saigon Shaking Beef (3/5): The beef chunks were way too chewy to enjoy. The slightly sweet, soy sauce was divine! Braised Short Rib (4/5): The piece of short rib was pretty sizeable for the dish! The meat was not super tender but the sauce was great. The broth is pretty thin. It comes with a piece of baguette (same of the banh mi) Saigon Hawker Rice (4/5): The pork was delicious. I liked the meatloaf! Comes with a dip and a side of rice and a runny sunnyside up egg. Overall, I had a great time and the customer service was exceptional. The dishes were good but preferred some...
Read moreAn adorable and hip date night spot with solid, satisfying Vietnamese classics. This place was something the upper east side desperately needed. We started with the summer rolls with tofu. They were delicious and came with a great peanut sauce. Next, we had the lemongrass tofu banh mi. We held the mayo so it would be vegan. The bread was fantastic - extremely fresh. Overall, the fillings could have been more generous, especially the jalapeño and tofu. Every component was really tasty, but we were hoping for a sandwich overflowing with goodies. The vegan pho was very good. It comes with steamed tofu and many fresh vegetables. The broth is bright and fresh and not overly salty. The stir-fried morning glory was fun and tasty, although the sauce was a little too salty. We also tried the nonalcoholic lychee martinis which were tasty and came in adorable glasses.
Overall, we loved our meal here, and particularly appreciated that the vegan options were plentiful and clearly labeled, so we didn't have to wonder what secretly contained fish sauce. However, the brilliantly conceived interior and wonderful service honestly had us expecting that the food would be even more delicious and innovative than it actually was. That being, we devoured everything and will definitely...
Read moreHonestly I’m quite impressed with the place and I definitely see why it has a Michelin star. The service was a little lack luster for what I’m normally accustomed to (having to wave down the waiters, pouring my own water, etc) but I think that was rather normal because I went during dinner time where it was super busy. Aside from that the menu was quite expansive giving you a lot options for a large assortment of Vietnamese dishes. Personally I had the Pho which is what I heard was the most common choice but was also a house favorite.
The dishes we ordered came out quickly and were definitely freshly cooked while coming out of the kitchen. The meat in my pho was definitely very tender and could match up with some other big names in terms of noodles like Ippudo or raku (Although they are different in that they are Japanese/chinese in origin and Lyly is Vietnamese). Honestly you really can’t go wrong with any of the pho dishes though based on their Michelin rating.
The environment of the space was really loud so definitely not something intimate for like a date night. But it would definitely suite a large group gathering, just a hangout with some friends or just somewhere chill to hangout and have some good food...
