I pass the Penrose frequently, a block from the 2nd Ave Q entrance on 83rd. It is a perfect spot to meet up after work for drinks and snacks. Good music, friendly atmosphere. I tell everyone, my husband and I had brunch with our wedding party there. Great place.
Recently my dad passed, and when trying to decide where to celebrate his life with extended family and friends my sister and I decided on The Penrose and emailed the events manager Chaya. She helped with everything, never got tired or short with her answers. We would think of all our questions after we signed off. Chaya made recommendations, helped our ideas come to life, and made a difficult moment easy.
Day of memorial: Chaya and her team created the perfect atmosphere. Our server Emma and bartender Audrey were exceptional. The guests kept telling us what great service, atmosphere and food, but repeated to us how great the servers were. We had 30 people, in the back area with tables and bar seating. Chaya helped us choose the right amount of food, and beverages. Emma kept the area clean with out being intrussive, Audrey kept us “hydrated”. We had a buffet food area - food was great! They put to go boxes out for guest to take treats home. Thanks to Chaya we were able to truly celebrate dad, she had his play list, which we provided pumped in and a slide show with his great life moments on the screen over the bar. He served in WWII, a decorated war hero, with great taste in music. They also insured the Honor Guard ceremony, presenting flag and playing of taps went off seamlessly.
As I said in my first paragraph The Penrose is a great place, but on this day it was exceptional. Chaya, Emma, and Audrey turned my dads celebration of life into a warm family moment that we will remember fondly and proudly.
Thank you Chaya, Emma, and Audrey! If missed names for behind the scenes...
Read moreGreat UES bar to have quality of food and drinks. We frequent this location, and the doorman Cory is always friendly, professional and a great conversationist while waiting on line. Would definitely recommend going. But I could not believe what these young ladies were saying on Friday - St. Patrick's Day. We were there to celebrate our Irish heritage, only to be interrupted by aggressive and angry women. We were seated outside, and were having a great night until 3 women could not get in because they did not have the proper PHOTO identification. They asked if they could show their ID on their phone. The doorman went above and beyond to try and help them to get in, but only for them to say they did not have any type of photo ID on their phone either. Then proceed to say "Don't worry you will not get raided." I was in awe when I heard that. Their behavior was atrocious. The doorman was only doing his job. They threatened to go across the street to get the police. The police agreed that they did not have proper ID and they do not have to let you in the establishment. Afterwards, they said that this bar is not all that and they are going to leave a bad review - all because they did not have the proper photo identification. As I was writing my review, I was reading other reviews and came across 2 reviews that reflected what happened the evening I was there. They are not telling the truth at all of what happened. The fact that they called the Cory the doorman racist is BEYOND untrue. He is a perfect gentleman, and we look forward to seeing him every time we go. They were they racist ones. The reviews were written by Hayley Nerenberg and Katina Scudder. Can any of their reviews be believable? I praise Cory for keeping his cool and staying professional and look forward to seeing him on...
Read moreThe Penrose is a quaint little bar located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and we found ourselves here after totally pigging out at Le Vain Bakery a couple of blocks away.
We placed reservations via OpenTable because we weren't sure what the crowd would look like and we were placed on a 2-top with plastic dividers between us and the next table.
Our server was sweet albeit very hands-off but we didn't really need a lot of table touching so we weren't all too frustrated over it.
PENROSE SPRITZ - $15 -- great bevvie and everything blended really well! Definitely one of those cocktails that'll sneak up on you if you're not too careful. 10/10 would order again
BELLS 'TWO HEARTED' IPA - $8 -- I can't remember if there was a happy hour deal for this but the boyfriend can't possibly describe this as anything but delicious for his IPA-craving soul.
FRIED PICKLES - $10 -- always a crowd pleaser and may have even converted my anti-pickle partner thanks to the delicious chipotle aioli sauce it came with! The pickles were perfectly fried and I absolutely enjoyed every bit of it.
HANDCUT FRIES - $8 -- you can't go wrong with these! Just get one of these and down a couple of beers and it's the perfect midway snack before dinner.
Overall, while we were fortunate to have stumbled upon this place during our visit I can't say that this would necessarily be a place I'd go back to again. With so many options in Manhattan, it's worth checking out at least once but I would easily pass it on my next trip to...
