I admit...I came here just to grab some oven baked pizza during a late and lazy Sunday afternoon.....however, the food was so tempting, so I ended up with not just a pizza (Cardie Sheen and Marky Marc are my cup of tea), but also with their delicious meatballs. Light and fluffy, tasty, in the light, and not too acidic, tomato sauce. Those are a must, believe me! The best ones I have tried recently, and I work in the Hospitality Industry. Thumbs up for that appetizer, no doubt, since I'm not a great fan of it, to be honest. Pizzas are oven baked, thin, rich enough, the service is not too pushy...but fast and consistent. I also had a great bottle of vermentino (a white wine grape variety that originates from Sardinia), the indigenous Italian type of grape which has been grown in Carneros, Sonoma Valley, in California. The winery is called RYME (after the couple of owners - Ryan and Megan). Dry, savory, stony wine, with a hint of almonds and sea salt, goes perfectly with a spicy food (my pizza had some habaneros). The restaurant has a nice wine list, although all of them are Made in USA. The girl that served me (I applogoize since I forgot to ask for her name) is a great example of a attentive hospitality worker. She impressed me in a certain way. This a small, but cozy local restaurant in Astoria, with a decent prices. Located on 31st Avenue, between 34th and 35th Street. I will definately come back, since it's a few steps from a place where I live. My strong recommendation if you like this type of food. P.S. Some small suggestions: please do not serve drinks (water and sodas) from plastic cups. I think this restaurant deserves better than that. This is my personal opinion though. And try to make your menu more attractive, it is quite boring at the first glance (it looks like a pamphlet) and not so inspiring for...
Read moreWe came in around 7 on a Sunday night & it was packed-- but despite being told it would be a 15 minute wait for a table, we only waited 2 minutes.
I got a small plate as a starter (the size of the small plates should actually be appetizers anyway)-- I got the crab cake ($15) and the bf got the octopus ($15), and we shared a Chardie Sheen ($16). The octopus was the star of the night, so tender, lemony, and the oil paired perfectly with the toasty yet pillowy pizza crusts. The charred, smokey, grilled suction cups on the tentacles fell off ever so gently, like chicharron of the sea. I just wish the plate came with at least 1 more tentacle, even if it's a small one. The crab cake was really good--it was like 95% crab, which I appreciated, and not some crab flavored stuffing that other places dare themselves to call "crab cakes". Sure, you might say $15 is a pretty hefty price to pay for 1 crab cake, but you're not gonna get imitation crab meat mixed with stoufer's stuffing--you'll get the real deal. Have you ever tried getting enough crab meat from actual crabs to make a crab cake? Let's not even get into the math of it.
The Chardie Sheen was unique. I've never had a pizza that thin, and with those toppings--I'm not disappointed. The crust was toasty yet pillowy, not thick and bready like other pizzas. The pizza wasn't a frozen abomination & that's always great to see, taste, and know. I enjoyed it, and would probably order it again if the Van Dammer wasn't sold out. I had my eye on you, Van Dammer... but I'll be back.
Sure, the prices are a bit high (especially the appetizers--they cost the same as the small plates), but what you get does taste pretty darn good. Definitely come here with an appetite for good food, laid back...
Read moreI want to like this place more but… I can’t understand some of their choices. My friend and I arrived for dinner and there was only 1 table filled in the front of the restaurant (out of about 12-15). They put us in the back and then promptly put a family (with a young child) right next to us while there were 7 open tables. The next group of 6 people were seated right next to us on the other side. So just imagine the scene… you have 4 tables of patrons but only 1 table in the front area and where passersby’s might see in and think “hmm, nobody eats here lets pass by” and 3 tables filled in the back all squished and listening to each others every word. This was not an enjoyable evening. Food is decent, though our pizza was cold very quickly after receiving it and my friends had the meatballs and no complaints. Also, why plastic water cups? Mine was chipped and reminded me of my youth when you couldn’t be trusted with a glass. Service was on point and friendly staff but the experience outweighed all of the positives. Oh and why you ask didn’t we ask to move…we were seated first so we were already settled with our stuff and...
