O'Hanlon's Bar, 14th Street, Manhattan: A Timeless Gem O'Hanlon's Bar on 14th Street in Manhattan holds a special place in my heart. As an Irish-born New Yorker now living in Australia, every time I visit New York City, I make it a point to stop by this iconic bar that has been a staple in my life for as long as I can remember. Having lived in the building next door, O'Hanlon's has always been a part of my neighborhood, and its presence has been a constant through the years.
Growing up just steps away from O'Hanlon's, I watched this bar become more than just a local watering hole. It was a place where locals and tourists alike could gather, enjoy a good pint, and experience a slice of Irish hospitality in the heart of Manhattan. From a young age, I’d pass by and hear the laughter spilling out from the pub’s open door, catching the scent of hearty meals and the unmistakable buzz of conversations. It was always a familiar and welcoming atmosphere, one that made you feel like you were part of something larger than just a neighborhood spot.
A Piece of Home in the City As an Irish person born in Manhattan, I’ve always felt a deep connection to my roots, and O'Hanlon's was the place where that connection was most palpable. The bar’s Irish-inspired décor, the friendly staff, and the lively crowd gave me the sense of being back in Ireland, even though I was so far from home. The traditional Irish pub vibe was always present, from the warm, dark wood furnishings to the cozy nooks where you could enjoy a quiet drink or join in on the animated banter. It was a place where I could feel at home, no matter how far I was from Ireland itself.
Now that I live in Australia, I often find myself reminiscing about the times I spent at O'Hanlon's. Whether it was a quick stop to catch up with friends or a long evening spent enjoying the atmosphere, it was always a place I could rely on for comfort and a sense of belonging. Whenever I return to Manhattan, I make sure to stop by O'Hanlon's, as it continues to evoke memories of my time living just next door.
The Charm of O'Hanlon's: A Welcoming Haven What sets O'Hanlon's apart from other bars is its genuine, unpretentious charm. It’s the kind of place where the bartenders know your name, the drinks are always served with a smile, and the conversation flows freely. I’ve always found the staff to be friendly and engaging, creating an atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer and soak in the warmth of the pub. The patrons are a mix of regulars and newcomers, but there’s an undeniable camaraderie that binds everyone together. Whether you’re a Manhattan native or visiting from across the world, O'Hanlon's has a way of making everyone feel like part of the family.
The bar’s menu, featuring classic Irish dishes, is also a big draw for me. Whether it’s a hearty shepherd’s pie, a classic Irish breakfast, or a satisfying pint of Guinness, the food at O'Hanlon’s is always comforting and well-executed. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while catching up with friends or unwinding after a long day.
A Must-Visit for Anyone in Manhattan If you ever find yourself in Manhattan, I highly recommend stopping by O'Hanlon’s Bar. It’s more than just a pub; it’s a place where memories are made, old friendships are rekindled, and new ones are formed. For me, O'Hanlon’s is a piece of home that I carry with me, no matter where I go. Its timeless charm, warm hospitality, and delicious food make it a standout spot on 14th Street. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of the good times and the lasting connections I’ve made, making O'Hanlon’s a place I’ll always return to whenever...
Read moreThere are 3 days that define a man’s life: the day he’s born, the day he marries, and the day he first steps foot in O’hanlon’s. Whether you’re there bright and early for a true Gunner’s experience, a late Saturday night closer, or a cheeky football Sunday afternoon, you are guaranteed to have the time of your life.
Everyone wants to experience something larger than themselves, and as I approach the promised land as the sun rises on a serene Premiere League morning, this is exactly how I feel. Few things on this earth get me going like Cristiano and the Stache pouring pints at 6am on North London Derby day. The excitement and passion from everyone behind the bar are what make the match days so life changing. Whether it’s an Ødegaard screamer or a Saka tap-in, you can bet your bottom that Cristiano will jump up on the bar to celebrate like it’s the last goal he’ll ever see. In addition, if you are ever lucky enough to take part in a post-match potluck, you can experience the community this bar has created. It’s moments like these that remind us why we fell in love with the beautiful game.
If you ever think your night out in the city is nearly over, I urge you to pull up to O’hanlon’s to meet the one and only Mason. Before entering, you will be greeted by the most loving man the world has ever seen (and his tea). As you stumble down the stairs, you may be lucky enough to get one of smoothest fist bumps I’ve ever received from the Venezuelan King Alfonso. John and Dane behind the bar are the dynamic duo you didn’t know you needed. They are always holding down the fort for the graveyard shifts. This bar always provides just the right amount of funk my late nights crave (also conveniently located next to both empanada mama and artichoke pizza).
If there is one place in this city to watch some NFL football, it’s gotta be… you guessed it! O’hanlon’s! It’s a great opportunity to sample the menu if you so choose (I always stick with the Ohanlons light), but more importantly have a nice catchup with the buds. Outside food is welcomed and encouraged, which provides the optionality that my friend group relies upon. If you’re lucky, you might even get some real deep life advice from Cristiano (and maybe a hug too!). No matter the time of day/week, this place is sure to put a smile on your face.

Read moreO'Hanlon's is pub meets basement rec room meets one of the oddest cuts of locals you'll find in Manhattan. Probably best known for its soccer showing which draws in weekend crowds, you might be surprised to learn it also opens at 9am, apparently to cater to night shift workers like those at the firehouse across the street. Because of that, I can never quite tell if O'Hanlon's is weathering bumpy times (it isn't always the cleanest and sometimes is low on stock) or if that's simply the reality of being open nearly 24-hours a day. Either way, that weirdness and its rougher edges do lend it an odd kind of charm that's hard to replicate, which is made all the more charming by great staff who are often more than happy to chat when it's not crazy busy.
Edit: In response to the reply from the owners, for me it'd be 5 stars probably if there was a bit more stock of bottles on the back bar. For bourbon for example, these days I don't see much besides Maker's but I remember there used to be a bit more variety? But if the strategy is to keep a simpler inventory, that's totally fair! Just have been surprised since...
