Let me start off by-- HOW DO YOU OVER COOK WHITE RICE? Or dare serve plain white rice at these prices? Warning- It just gets worse.
I must say I felt rushed to order and complete my meal since the waiter was going off lunch duty. He kept disturbing and standing over me and I had to ask him to give me space. I can say for what I was spending it was NOT a good idea. I loved my chicken satay and my friend said his hot and sour soup was perfect. The chicken noodle is over priced and just mediocre. The chicken with walnuts is dry and could be candied walnuts! However, I was not pleased with the overcooked crispy steak and had it made over. The brownie with coconut ice cream was nothing special. The whipped cream was just okay. The bathroom was dirty, the floor was very nasty and I used it after one of the cooks. It was very dark in the bathroom and up a few steps- I don't know how handicapped or wheel chairs would be treated here, as the eating area is down stairs. When you walk in the place looks dark and closed. The modern soft rock music played through the meal which I found odd it wasn't more cultural. There were plain tables with white tablecloths very close together and we were seated so close to the next door couple -- I felt like it was privacy invasion!! There were plenty of other empty tables. There was a long bench seat along the wall and I was in the crack of the pillows feeling unbalanced till the neighbors left and I was able to move my table. The food is costly lunch- we actually had the $28 lunch special-if I went to Chinatown it would have been $28 for both of us with FREE TEA! If that was included no one offered.
For the price and the neighborhood: I would have loved to be WOWed by a special meal or presentation. Nothing rated to give that OH- Look, I am eating Food on East 60St and its so special. The place looked more like it was saving on electricity and rushing to get us out. I was even still eating and they were so eager to say-- are you ready for us to prepare desert. Like seriously.... there was a party of 8 -- that sat after us and was getting their food as I was eating.
Adding in: My friend gave the server $5 for recooking my meal When I gave the bill back- the same server asked to I want change. Yea, sure take another $7. How much tip do they think they deserve when he wasn't even the original Server? {0.15 x $48.00=$7.20}. You didn't do much but annoy me. You deserve $12 that's over 20% - Over Priced tips and food.
mhm... makes me wonder.... Also, I didnt see Al Sharpton dining on 3/8.
Update: October 2018- I returned but did take out. The bar area played music that was to loud for the area. Blasting noise made it hard to even hear my friend sitting on the couch right next to me. I’d like to add the hostess was pleasant and polite. The food on the other hand was greasy! The vegetable fried rice had so much oil it leaked all over the sealed bag. The 3 skewers of chicken for the price! Seriously was outrageous! My Asian friend said she had better dumplings at cheaper prices. I just can’t understand why it’s...
Read moreSo this was our first stop for restaurant week! I’ve always been wanting to try them so I decided to stop here first. When you walk into this dimmed low kew but high end style Chinese restaurant you are greeted by 1 (or 3) hosts who ask you if you have reservations. When they find your name, and if your table isn’t ready, they’ll direct u to the bar/lounge area where you can sit at one of the circular tables and order a drink while you wait. The music selection is hip and they play a variety of upbeat songs that I definitely enjoyed. The service here is amazing. We were greeted by a server who immediately put water in our glasses and menus at our table and gave us a few minutes to order. We had a lychee peach sangria while we decided. It was the perfect balance of sweet. The lychee went perfect with the peach liquor. We also ordered a bottle of red wine, I think it was the bell select. For $60 you can’t really go wrong; especially when you take into account that most people usually have more than 2 drinks at dinner and spend way more on cocktails. Restaurant week specials are $42 per person for a 3 course meal. We each ordered the satay, I did the chicken and my lady had the shrimp. When I say that this satay was easily the BEST I’ve ever had I’m in no way exaggerating. It’s all in the sauce. Most chicken satay I’ve had around the city is dry and rough. The meat and how the chefs at Phillipe cook it comes out succulent and moist. On top of that they use this sauce that I’ve never had anywhere else before. It’s sweet and savory. The perfect addition to a satay dish. For entrees I had the roast pork butt; a high end twist to what I’d like to think of as boneless spare ribs and she had the wok seared branzino (Both Pictured). These entrees were super flavorful and we equally enjoyed them both very much! The branzino came over sliced spicy eggplant, perfectly seared with a crisp layer of skin on the outside and a tender inside texture. Exactly how branzino should be in my opinion. The pork butt came with a honey barbecue glaze on the top cooked to perfection, sliced in a sweet and savory sauce with sugar snap peas. For dessert I had the fortune cookie red velvet cake and she had the dark chocolate layer cake. Both of these desserts were super on the rich and heavy side. Especially after the first two courses we struggled to finish them (not really) but when it came time for our last course we looked at each other like “WOW”. Her chocolate cake came with a side of miso caramel ice cream and my red velvet came traditional with cream cheese icing and raspberry sauce with a chocolate fortune cookie on top. They were super tasty and a perfect conclusion to a great night at Phillipe’s. We will...
Read moreI had such high expectations for Philippe Chow. Unfortunately my experience was a uncomfortable one. Firstly upon entering the hostess, a woman with blonde hair. She was extremely rude about a system error with my reservation for 3. She claimed my reservation was for 4 but my emailed confirmed different. Even after I explained and proved this must be a error it was like she didn't comprehend anything I was saying. She continued to say my table is for 4 and I had to wait for my 4th guest. At this point I was extremely annoyed with her snobbish rude attitude and inability to comprehend what I was saying. Not to mention My husband a (Proud Black Man) and I a (Proud Latina/Arabic woman) felt profiled and looked down.
After 5 minutes of waiting we were finally seated inside on the upper floor. The ambiance was beautifully set. We were helped by a elder man in a white suit. Surprisingly our food came fast. I ordered honey glazed ribs and lobster noodles. The honey glazed ribs tasted amazing but was mostly bone then meat. The lobster noodles were season-less, ZERO FLAVOR. And the lobsters texture and taste was completely undercooked. I felt as if they took noodles and boiled it with absolutely no seasoning slapped it on a plate and just mixed the lobster. My husband however ordered shrimp fried rice with the Beijing chicken it was sweet with walnuts. His dish was by far the best. My daughter ordered broccoli w/chicken covered in a garlic butter sauce. Her order was completely bland, the chicken tasted and looked like turkey cold cuts. Over all the food wasn't what I excepted at all.
Not to mention my husband asked the elder man in the white suit for Another drink and his response was "YOU KNOW ITS GOING TO COST YOU MORE". It reminded me of the movie Selena when she asked the price for a dress and the lady responded with "it's very expensive". OBVIOUSLY it's going to cost more for another drink that wasn't the request we asked for. It was for another drink his response was so unnecessary and felt very profiled. Because of this he only received a 18% tip. Honestly he's lucky I tipped him at all for that comment.
My over all experience wasn't what I would have expected. The food is completely over rated, Bland and under cooked. Or just not worth the price. The service felt profiled by race. I watched the same elderly man kindly go above and beyond for the white couple in front of us and even offered a coffee with out mentioning "It's going to cost more"
I will not recommend Philippe and I don't think I will be returning. Jue lan has wayyyy better...
