Sandwell — Restaurant in New York

Edit: I went back to try again and the woman who helped me order was so friendly and helpful. Got our food in less than 15 mins. The sandwiches were yummy and well made. Soft in the middle with crispy ends and hampers-packed with ingredients.

I understand places get busy and hit hard with rush hour. I can have empathy for that and I did while I patiently waited an hour. Yes. A whole hour.

But when I see a pretty girl and some guys friend getting their sandwiches before me when they came in after and while I’ve been waiting, it’s a little frustrating. Especially when the manager confirms that someone on his team started skipping around on the orders.

He tried to reassure me that my stuff was coming out and I’d be refunded, for which I was really grateful and understanding. But after waiting for an hour, and seeing yet another pair of people get food after ordering after me and realizing the sandwich they made me wasn’t on gluten free bread (which is the whole reason I came to this place), I had to leave.

My partner thought their food was overrated and kind of mid, but I continued defending it for weeks saying how much I wanted to go back. Guess he was right after all. Spent an hour here and wound up missing half of an event I was supposed to go...

I’ve gotten the vegan (Remy) sandwich from Sandwell three times, and on each occasion it was really good. (And a friend I was with raved about his sandwich.) They have a great touch and manage to get a lot in there — from roasted veggies to a cannellini spread. And after being laid out on freshly made bread of your choice, the sandwich is put through a slow conveyor belt pizza oven which gives it a nice toasty warmth. It’s more of a takeout spot than for dining in, though they do have a counter with chairs and in warm weather, outdoor seating. I found the pizza oven to be quite noisy, but that’s OK because I’m happy to take the sandwich to go for a picnic or bring it home, where I like to add additional ingredients like tofu, olives and avocado. (It would be nice if the vegan sandwich had a heartier serving of protein, but all the other sandwiches certainly do and the sandwiches themselves are quite ample in size.) There are not many other vegan options, though there is one vegan side of broccoli that looks nice. But for me, it’s all about the sandwiches. I need to give a special shout out to the manager of this location, undoubtably the kindest, and most appreciative customer service ever. I ordered to go a Caesar salad, asked to have the buffalo chicken Instead of the other chicken that was listed on the menu. I also paid for an extra Caesar dressing on the side. I get home and saw that I did not get any dressing but instead got the regular chicken and two sides of buffalo sauce. I called the restaurant and the manager picked up, he remembered my order. There must’ve just been a communication and and he had given the wrong instructions to the kitchen. He could not have been nicer, he immediately apologized and offered to send me dressing. He set up a full delivery, I got the tracking link, and not only did he send dressing but a handwritten note and extra goodies.
