Society Cafe is located off the lobby of a boutique hotel (Walker Hotel) in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. Please note, this review is based on my enjoying a cocktail and nosh at the bar upon arrival while my room was being prepared as well as Breakfast/Brunch the following morning prior to departure. First to mention, the space is quaint and warm; the decor and ambiance is classic but modern at the same time. So, first impression is that this place is promising. Next up the greeting, the gentleman who greeted me upon arrival, was welcoming, cordial and attentive. I said that I was waiting for someone and wanted just a cocktail and nosh and bar seating would be perfect ... he motioned me to the bar (immediately adjacent to the entrance). I sat at the bar and was greeted by the bartender’s friendly smile, he expertly took and prepared my cocktail order, a goose dirty martini, he shook that drink within an inch of its life, served up frosty cold, smooth, and delicious as can be! He too was kind and warm, inviting not quick to serve and move on, my guest arrived, we enjoyed a few more cocktails, a nosh of Chickpea Fries and Blistered Shishito Peppers both perfect portions that hit the spot for an afternoon pick-me-up. The next morning, we were greeted again by the same gentleman as the afternoon prior, he was again, warm, and welcoming, well groomed (we commented about his perfect hair .. LOL) and ready to run the show; by now I gather he is the Manager on staff and with good reason. He guided us to our table, made sure that we were settled in with our menus and ready to enjoy a fantastic first meal of the day! The menu selections are ample, easy to find something for everyone’s tastes. We had a tough time deciding but chose to split Market Omelet which came with breakfast potatoes, Murray’s Everything Bagel with House Made Lox and a Side of Applewood Bacon ... all portions were perfect and the quality of the preparation on everything was perfect! Our server was attentive and kind, again she welcomed us and treated us like guests in her own home. Society Café is a little gem of a place in the Village, tucked in the back of the Walker Hotel; excellent service and leadership by the Manager on staff (3/23 & 3/24), excellent service and competence by the bartender, he too was there the following morning and excellent service and warmth from our server. I know that NYC has a million places to go, but if you want welcoming warmth, excellent hospitality, and a competent friendly staff, stop here to enjoy it all! I am glad I stayed at the Walker but am ecstatic that I decided not to venture too far...
Read moreThis spot is located inside the Walker Hotel Greenwich Village, tucked away in the back. It is almost hidden. The lobby of the hotel was a few steps down from the street. It was very nice, laid back and relaxing atmosphere with a fireplace. The restaurant entrance is to the left, through the narrow hallway passed the book shelves.
There was supposed to be someone at the front, right by the narrow hallway at the host/hostess section. But, we didn’t see anyone, so we walked into the restaurant. As soon as we got inside the restaurant, a staff came over and assisted us. They had a full bar, pretty good size too.
The restaurant was big, beautiful and very welcoming. Since we were there early, it was mostly empty. The restaurant had a skylight, bringing in lots of natural light, supported by lots of soft lights.
The beautiful interior was not the only great thing that won us over. Their complimentary bread is not any ordinary bread. They brought us huge popovers that was warm and fluffy!
We all got some cocktails to start, they were tasty, interesting, strong and sophisticated drinks.
We got a couple of appetizers, Lobster Tater Tots and Short Rib Poutine. The tater tots were small both in size and portion, total of 7 tots in the plate... It was tasty, but didn't really get the lobster flavor, and wish if they had bigger portion. Poutine was flavorful with good amount of ribs.
For main, we had Brisket Burger, Sesame Crusted Yellowfin Tuna, and two of us got Atlantic Sea Scallops. They all looked pretty amazing, beautifully plated. My scallop was a bit too salty which was unfortunate, but the rest was quite tasty.
At the end, we ordered Carrot Cake and Mascarpone Cheesecake to share. At the time of reservation, I told the restaurant that we are celebrating my friends’ anniversary. I didn’t ask for anything special, but they went ahead and decorated the cheesecake for the celebration which was really sweet!
The service was warm and welcoming. They were polite and took a really good care of us. All the dishes were made with high quality ingredients, and we enjoyed them all. I am happy to have found this spot, it is certainly...
Read moreWe celebrated a milestone for our daughter with 26 guests for dinner at the Society Cafe this past Saturday evening. Our experience was stellar, from the first prompt return phone call from their catering manager Erin Baker to the moment when the last guest left the restaurant! Before the event, Erin worked with me to choose an appropriate menu and drink package. We decided on the Local Burrata, and Red Watercress salad to start, Prime Strip Steak, and Bell & Evans Chicken as our main course, with sides of Pomme Puree and Broccoli Di Ciccio. The meal began with baskets of warm fresh pop-overs and herbed butter, the rest of the meal was served family-style, and it was delicious and plentiful! The Burrata salad was served with baby beets, greens, and croutons, and it was fresh and very tasty. There was enough for everyone to enjoy! The steak was cooked to absolute perfection, and the chicken had a perfect crisp, with tender, juicy meat. Our guests were raving during the meal into the next day. Our dinner was topped off with the chef’s selection of sweets; Carrot Cake served with fried cinnamon carrots and caramel sauce, the most delicious Vanilla Crème Brûlée I have ever tasted, and a delicious moist Chocolate Cake served with a vanilla whipped cream. Aside from the outstanding food, we were seated very comfortably in the main dining room with enough space to move around. The staff treated us kindly and promptly. We will definitely be returning for another delicious meal, as will many of our guests. Most of the reviews listed here are for Brunch, so we took a chance. The Society Cafe far exceeded our expectations, and if you choose to dine here, you will not be...
