Visiting Stand Up NY on a Friday night offered a unique glimpse into the club's valiant efforts at reinvention and its struggle to capture the essence of what makes a comedy venue thrive. Firstly, it's commendable to see a venue striving for growth and pushing boundaries to rejuvenate its appeal. The ambition to revamp its identity and enhance the overall experience is palpable, marking a promising step towards redefining its place in the city's nightlife.
However, it's apparent there are underlying reasons why Stand Up faces challenges in drawing larger crowds, particularly on what should be one of the busiest nights of the week. While the club's spirit of innovation is noteworthy, there seems to be a disconnect between its offerings and the expectations of its potential audience. The quality of the acts, although varied, occasionally lacks the consistency needed to keep the audience engaged throughout the evening. Comedy, after all, is an art that demands a delicate balance between innovation and relatability, something the club is still in the process of mastering.
Moreover, the ambiance and service, crucial elements of the overall experience, appear to need fine-tuning. A welcoming, comfortable environment and attentive service greatly enhance the enjoyment of live comedy, making them areas where Standup could potentially improve to match the expectations of its guests.
In conclusion, Standup deserves recognition for its bold attempts at transformation and for its commitment to providing a platform for comedians to showcase their talent. However, for the club to truly flourish and fill its seats, especially on Friday nights, a more focused approach might be necessary. This could include refining the selection of acts to ensure a consistently high-quality lineup, improving the overall ambiance of the club, and enhancing service standards. There is a wealth of potential waiting to be unlocked at NY Standup, and with further adjustments, it could indeed become a staple in the local...
Read moreWe were walking through times square and aproached regarding a 'sold out comedy experience featuring Chris Rock all week and some of the hottest US stand up' we purchased two tickets at 20 dollars each and looked forward to the next night where we would live this magical promised experience. Having woke up next day feeling a bit gullable we realised Chris Rock probably wouldn't be there but none the less surely there would be some good acts.
The time came, date night in NYC, dinner and we caught a ride to the comedy venue. As the taxi pulled up I realised our error in judgement. What only can be described as a dingy sh1thole greeted us. Lifeless and grim we walked in with the other 9 people in the 'sold out comedy extravaganza' we were seated, we were dubious.
In fairness the host built our hopes up, he was OK and his 5 minutes were enjoyable and we laughed 3 times. I get comedy is difficult and the people who do it deserve credit. But this was absolutely awful. Open Mic fair enough 'comedy show' absolutely not. We left after 3 out of 6 acts as we felt rude to leave during someone's act. Being British I don't complain. I felt something had to be said whilst I paid 46 dollars for 4 beers (mandatory 18 dollar minimum drinks order plus mandatory 20% service charge) I was told that it must have been scalpers (touts) who misled us. I however am fairly confident touts would not have much luck selling 'to hot to handle tickets' when the audience consisted of 11 people and half of the pub was shut anyway. We had a fun taxi ride back to times square laughing about how bad the evening was which kind of made up for the night itself. Would not recommend to anyone. Absolute...
Read moreComedians should not waste their energy performing here. Although I enjoyed 5 out of the 7 comedians, that cannot bump this review up a single star. You should all perform at a place that takes pride in themselves.
There is a ludicrous $18 drink minimum on top of paying for the show. The only way to get out of this exemption is if you're under 21. I asked if I could purchase $18 worth of food instead since I do not drink (plus I drove); however, the waiter simply stated that food does not count towards the minimum, with the implication being I either buy a drink or get out. Thankfully there were patrons willing to drink my share.
When I caved to order waffle fries ($9), the waiter informed me that it would take around 20 minutes. 40 minutes passed, and the waiter brought what appeared to be waffle fries from the diner next door, complete with the to-go tin container and packets of ketchup.
When it came time to pay the bill my friend and I discovered we were overcharged due to a failure to meet the minimum, which was not the case at all. After yet another back and forth with the waiter, we were given the correct bill with the $22 overcharge subtracted from the bill. Not exactly a minor oversight.
The fact that a sizable number of people left before the checks came was telling, and in hindsight, I should have not paid either. The least I could do now is warn people of my experience so they may make their...
