Our quest for the perfect brunch continued. From one Sunday to the next, we hiked these Manhattan hills pleading our supposed God for salvation from overpriced, over-roasted coffees and runny eggs. Our prayers had been answered.
Sunday to Sunday's funky atmosphere make it an easy call for any friendly rendezvous. An unpretentious menu offers simple choices, with well-curated ingredients. The avocado, mushroom, or salmon toasts all intrigued, but after a night of booze and pizza, I quested for something a bit more restorative: overnight oats. Topped with a perfectly scooped ball of yogurt, sliced banana, and a handful of granola, this medley of vittles nourished my brain and calmed my stomach. For Ariana, it's always about the eggs. If she doesn't like em, she won't eat em. She ate the all the eggs. The only complaint would have been the mealy potatoes. Thankfully, the coffee was made-to-any order, including Ariana's oat milk latte or my skim milk with Splenda, a hard to find standard of choice from most brunch establishments.
A respite in the claustrophobic Lower East Side brunch mob, Sunday to Sunday is an emancipation from the lines and 'to-be-seen' attitudes. It's not quite a holy trinity of excellence (divine menu, incredible service, sublime ambience), but it does do everything just about right. And that's the kind of deliverance I'm looking for...
Read more* Carbonara The best thing of having a carbonara — poking the runny egg yolk gently to coat your pasta. My mom raved about their carbonara as its sauce was rich and creamy, combined with crispy bacon. If you have a big appetite, you will find their portion difficult to fill your hungry belly. For me, it had the right amount of pasta to satisfy my cravings before I had trouble cleaning the whole plate.
* Pain Perdu WOW it came with two pillowy challah bread! It was sliced with the exact right thickness, giving it enough room to soak up the egg and milk. The dish was nicely decorated with 3 dots of raspberry drizzle and maple syrup, creating a happy combination of sweet and sour. It was also topped with a huge scoop of mascarpone cream to spread all over your French toast. Not the best pain perdu I’ve had, but it’s pretty much impossible to go wrong.
* Cappuccino Average. I’m less picky when it comes to coffee serving at brunch spots. I treat it more like a prop for photos/an accompaniment to my...
Read moreVery poor experience. My friend and I (both African American women) ordered food to sit down and dine outside. Waiter brought out a drink with to us without even knowing what drink it was, I waited a very long time just for a side order of cauliflower and when I went up to the window found that the order was just sitting at the counter. To add to this, my friend and I were the ONLY customers who were given our food in to go boxes, while everyone else who dined at the site were given ACTUAL dishes and silverware. We were the only African Americans dining I will add. I addressed this with the workers who told me that they did it because they were understaffed and were trying to save time. I told him to look around and look that everyone else were given actual dishes besides my friend and I. He denied any discriminatory behavior, but I beg to differ. This was not a good experience and do not plan on dining here again unless there is a reevaluation of how ALL paying...
