Worst Hotel experience in New York in my life
Extremely loud music banging from the speakers of several nigh clubs and bars downstairs. Bad soundproofing Rude and arrogant night manager, who didn’t care at all about our ordeal and, what’s worse, lied to us. I booked the “Large King with Balcony”, which is of the most expensive rooms and is indeed nice because it has, as the name says, a large balcony. When we came back form dinner we were appalled: entering our room was like entering a night club! The loud music that blasted from the several clubs and bars downstairs was absolutely intolerable. I know that the management will probably reply to this review with more lies, but I have a video taken from my room which shows the extension of the problem. We made several attempts to sleep with no luck, so I called reception. Richard, the night manager, was rude and arrogant and showed no care whatsoever for the fact that we were up since 5am, had flown from out of town and had paid around USD550 (tax included) per night to stay inside what sounded like a night club. He admitted to having had complaints in the past and said that “they are considering to work on the soundproofing, but that for now the only thing he could do was to change us room”. He changed us to room 202, Which is a Classic King. Although we were relieved to hear that there was a solution and we would sleep after all, we soon found out that wouldn’t be the case. This room was now right above the street: drunk kids yelling, cars honking, and no possible sleep. when I asked Richard if they would refund us for the difference in room category between the one we had booked and this cheaper one, his answer was “no. all rooms are the same price. The only difference is that the other one has a balcony, but in the weekend it’s all the same price”. Well this is obviously a big lie. There is no hotel in the world that sells rooms of different categories at same prices in the weekend and different prices during the week. I also know that because I booked the room for that very same weekend and, when I did, I saw that the room I booked was around 50% more expensive than the one he put me in. you can easily check this for yourselves by browsing the hotel website. For example, I made a simulation for the weekend of June 24 to 27th (which is the first weekend when they have both room types available. The result: Classic King $309/night ; Large King with Balcony: $449 / night. But since we really needed sleep at this point (it was around 1am by then), we tried to sleep and thought to discuss it the next morning. Except we couldn’t. Just too much noise Knowing I would never be able to sleep, I decided to book another hotel (more expensive given the last minute on a Friday night in Manhattan), pack, call an Uber and leave. The night manager, who was chilling in the reception, didn’t care. On June 4th I wrote to the “manager” (I still don’t know who I’m corresponding with) to request a refund, because we had no alternative but to leave in the middle of the night and I wouldn’t want to pay around US$1600 for three nights of a hotel where I wouldn’t sleep in (and much less pay for two hotels). I sent them a video, showing the incredibly loud music and noise in the room (which of course they know way too well). On June 5th, I received the following response: "Hi Daniel, We are reaching out to let you know that as per our onsite team there will be no refund to process since they have tried to assist you and when they are about to offer another unit but you decided to leave and check out. Thanks for your understanding. Take care! " Once again, their answer shows bad faith and a lie: We WERE actually moved to room 202. I insisted on my request and until now, two days later, have received no answer. I strongly advise anyone against going through this experience, which has been the worst in NY in my 35 years of visiting the city for...
Read moreI did a lot of research before booking the Blue Moon Hotel. I read so many reviews about how charming this hotel was, and how warm the family who staffed the hotel and restaurant were. I specifically chose this property because of its history that I wanted to share with my teenagers who were seeing NYC for the first time, and thought it would be a completely unique and educational (and fun) experience. Unfortunately we experienced none of this. When we checked in, we were greeted as though it was a pain to bother the staff. When we got to our room my kids looked and me and said "Mom, do they even want us to stay here?" We stayed for three nights, and the restaurant was never open for one of them so we never got to try any of the food others raved about. Most of the time when we passed the person at the front desk he barely looked up from his phone. I cannot tell you one thing about the property's history, but I am very glad that we did an excellent tour at the Tenement Museum across the street so I could share this with my family. I requested no housekeeping but did ask for fresh towels. It took three times asking to get them. ||||The room itself was fine. It was large, which we appreciated, and although we were plainly told upon check-in that we would have absolutely no view, we did enjoy the balcony. Just keep in mind that unless you're high up, you will see none of the city views advertised so much on the website and on the hotel's social media channel. The one aspect of the room that I did have a real issue with was the mold around the bathtub. Again, I booked this property because I knew a soak in the tub would be appreciated after long days of walking. But the mold around the perimeter of the tub and faucet was just gross, and we basically all just closed our eyes while we were showering and got in and out as quickly as possible. This is an easy fix - address it, please, for future guests.||||We had a nice visit to NYC, but I can't say I would ever recommend this property to anyone. I would choose another hotel in the neighborhood because it's a great part of town, and so culturally rich. Maybe it would have been a different experience with different staff, but I'll never know. I left feeling like I was really duped by the marketing for the hotel compared to what we experienced, and it cost me dearly in both...
