I’ve been to another Taipei Hong in Elmhurst. This one is located off Roosevelt in Flushing inside a 5-stall mini food court and may not be easy to locate. I guess the best marker is T-Mobile which is 2 door away.
There’re a few 2-seater tables shared among all stalls, but aside from the 3 against wall, they are subject to foot traffic and people who are waiting. So this is really geared for carry-out orders.
I don’t normally order this dish because it always gets preempted by other bolder dishes when I’m in town. Today nostalgia called and I made it a point to get it. It’s listed as “Mixed Tempuras” on the menu; I’d subtitle it as “Tempura Bowl with Broth”. My MIL is right that it’s a dish we can easily make with ingredients from an Asian supermarket, but the sauce that accompanies the dish is crucial and I don’t think it’s readily available in stores. The bowl consists of chunks of Daikon radishes, fish balls, fish cakes, seafood tofus, and fried tofus soaked in a pool of the magic sauce, with a cup of pork broth served separately. It was very temperature hot and very satisfying. The soft and crunchy texture is very easy on the mouth. I got what I came for and I highly recommend this dish.
I also ordered some Taiwanese Burgers with pork bellies. It didn’t look its best and I’ve had better ones elsewhere. So yeah, I’ll need to come back for their signature dishes to give a...
Read moreI always get the Taiwan Railway salt chicken bento box. It taste like being back in Taiwan again. It's nothing fancy but that's how it is in Taiwan, practical and tasty. A thin layer of rice covered with some cabbage, some pickled mustard greens, some stewed ground pork and eggs, slices of Taiwanese sausage, and a varying side (I don't remember what I had 3 months ago but I recently had mapo tofu and they were both delicious). Also, they give the crispy popcorn chicken in a separate to-go box which shows their care since I dislike soggy crispy chicken. I do like Legend Chicken a lot but the crispy chicken here is just as good and small enough portion to not overwhelm.
I wish they had something like this in Boston 🥲 (Tech Square...
Read moreIf it wasn't for Google, I would never know this place existed. I got a bunch of their bento boxes to share with my friends yesterday and I was amazed at how delicious it was. We got the salt and pepper chicken over rice, the pork chop over rice, the gua bao (delicious slab of pork, with some sort of crushed peanuts and brown sugar concoction, pickled vegetables, and it was Delicious. The meat was so juicy)! The salt and pepper friend chicken was also delicious and the broccoli and bean sprouts were cooked to perfection! They were crispy and yummmmm. It was also nice that they threw on some minced braised pork over the rice. I would definitely give this place a try if you guys want some delicious...
