This review is a bit overdue as I have been an off and on customer of Attic since they opened a few years ago in Flushing.
At first when I heard about it, I thought it was a very cool concept. Later it dawned on me that this is quite the unique scene in downtown Flushing (there are bars and lounge areas) because it was the first speakeasy in the area (the only one that I am aware of to date).
And it is an oyster bar which both intrigued me and scared me. A while back, I had read something that eating raw oysters was detrimental to one's health but those instances are very very far and few since raw oysters are a popular happy hour item and appetizer at a lot of other places.
The oysters here are very good quality and consist of Kumamoto and Copps Island. I am certainly no expert on oysters but the manager was so nice she helped me order a good variety to try. She seems quite the expert on oysters. Each one has a very distinct taste apparently (my palate for oyster tasting is not very refined) depending on where they originated from. Try to come during HH to get the best deal on oysters.
As far at the menu goes, they offer some pretty high end items (things that I feel you would only find in Manhattan)
Wagyu beef burger with optional truffle and caviar. The truffle and caviar put the price point over the top. its a delicious burger for anyone willing to pay.
The short rib with bone marrow combo is quite delicious. This and one other spot that I know of serve bone marrow and the short rib is so tender it really does fall off the bone.
The salmon is a popular dish but sometimes the fish pieces differ in size from the previous time you ordered. Overall a solid choice as an entree.
One of my favorite appetizers was the simple order of homemade bread. You can taste the freshness and feel the warmth in every bite.
Of course you cannot for the most important aspect of the speakeasy...the drinks! On the rare occasion that I do partake in alcohol, this spot offers some very imaginative cocktails like
Gunpowder - Sipsmith gin, St Germain, Lemon Juice, Egg white, honey
Violent End - Jimbean bourbon, Blackberries, Egg white, Chambord, Blood Orange
Babylon Xpress- Cucumber, Beluga Vodka, Pineapple, Fresh Lime, Attic Syrup
Tokio Penicillin - Toki, Islay, Lemon Juice, House Ginger Syrup
You are bound to find at least one drink you like and they can make popular drinks like Old fashion or White russian for those season drinkers.
A trip to the Attic during the week at night will have a more chill and calm ambience whereas weekends the place will be busy if you decided to walk in on a Friday or Saturday night.
There is sometimes available seating at the bar but the actual seating area is quite nice and probably one of the fanciest I have seen the area. If you can get one of the comfy sofa-like chairs or booths for your group then that would be a plus. The whole essence of Attic from the moment you walk up those never ending stairs (slight exaggeration) and see the layout, you already know it will be a good time. I recommend this spot to friends who visit the area and try to take them when I have time.
Try to visit the place if you are near DT Flushing. Just a fair warning. The menu prices for food and drink are higher compared to other spots in the area but the quality and overall experience I find is worth it for special occasions or showing friends a...
Read moreAs a black women dining on her own I wouldn’t recommend this place. Look at the bad reviews and you’ll see the very same thing being brought up. Im a Hispanic dark skin woman. I felt off and the energy at the bar as well. I felt like other people were treated differently. I wonder if I’m the only one that felt like this but apparently not. I can’t understand how in 2023 there’s so many bars and restaurants still with this race mindset you wouldnt understand unless you are dark skin sitting at the bar by yourself and a female too. But anyways, Bartenders act as you there to serve them not vice versa, the crown is filled wit A lot of condescending people. Im not the type to judge people or talk down on people but some people do deserve to be treated exactly how they act. All I have to say that today I’m here tomorrow we don’t know where will be. I sat at the bar the bartender doesn’t know his menu or what they selling I ask what he would recommend and all I got was “umm depend what you want” the bartenders really rubbed me the wrong way as I heard them over talking about customers . At one point a customer apparently complain about their coke being flat he then proceeded to change the drink and tell the serve to bring them the cans in case they complain again so they can see is fresh. He seemed annoyed over the fact they ask for their drink to be change. He was constantly complaining about customer requests and just his vibe was negative and very rude: : I had the oysters I order one of each I liked one in particular and I ask the bartender which one was that and he didn’t know he just picked one and was like oh yeah that’s this oyster but I know he was lying because it didn’t taste like the one I had plus I worked in a restaurant theirs no way for you to know which one they put on the plate unless you the one doing it. He went to the computer look at the oysters I ordered and said yeah this is the one you ordered. Do you think I’m dumb . but I understood he didn’t know what he was doing so I was like whatever I ate the oysters which honestly are not that amazing I had better oysters at the food market. Then I order the short rib” God help me this tasted like old beef. As I was eating it I wanted to throw up it was disgusting. They saw that I wasn’t eating it and nobody approach me to ask if everything was ok. I just ask for my check and not even then they ask if the food was ok. I left it and I just left the Standishment. This is hands down one of the worst places I been too. The drink was just like any other drink honestly I should of gone home ordered Chinese food and called it a day. I think those bartenders should definitely be fire. I did pay for my food and horrible service because at the end of the day this is a business. But if you want try it for yourself one thing about me is that I will say the truth. Only nice thing about this place were the two girls in the front which were trying to overweight all the bad energy these bartenders were emanating. But you know now I know where never in my life to come back to .STOP SUPPORTING BUSINESSES LIKE...
Read more@theattic_flushing_ . This is truly a hidden gem in Flushing. Im a bit late to this though, well, it’s a speak easy bar/lounge and I for one, don’t drink so even if this was on my radar, I wouldn’t think much of it… however, they do have HH oysters which was on my to check out list…. . But man, aside from their pretty cocktails and interior design, the food is delicious. The menu isn’t big and I already feel like I’ve tried most of the items…The reel is a compilation of 4 visits… highly recommend the foie Gras and Uni app - yes, it’s one of the most expensive items they offer, by yolo… and do not skip on their short rib with bone marrow. So tender and juicy… packed with flavor, so deep… mix with the marrow, so decadent… I can go on and on but IG has limitations… . When you’re at The Attic you don’t feel like you’re in Flushing, as least not in the hustle and bustle of downtown Flushing. It’s a nice place to get away but not having to go too far… the perfect place for drinks before and/or after dinner. Or even for a just because meet up with friends.. . You can easily miss this place by passing by although their door is so nice you really can’t, unless you’re not looking. So do check this place out. If you already know of this place which seems to be the case for most of my followers, but do know their food is really good? While I have not had any of their oh so pretty cocktails, I’ve only heard about them being good. I’ve only had their gingerale and let me tell you, it’s good. I like the crushed/mini ice cubes that they use. . For you non drinkers, I know how it feels to go to a bar and not order alcoholic beverages, so just order food!! Lol… I mean, I would hate to not go to a place for good food if they’re labeled as a bar ya know… it’s very seldom that bars/lounges have good food so don’t pass on...
