The Chocolate Room doesn't have a personnel problem, it has a culture problem. A culture of micro aggressions, poor customer service, and casual racism. My last experience with The Chocolate Room was at their 5th Ave. location, it was such a disgusting and disappointing experience that I hadn't patronized their business in years. The experience involved an older white guy, who had a very unpleasant attitude and a very dismissive demeanor. I noticed he would be very short and not at all welcoming to non-white customers, yet happy and smiling with the white ones. I understand that an employee doesn't speak for a business, however it does speak to the business' mindset when they keep that employee on. As the 5th Ave location closed, apparently some of the old staff including the older white guy was moved to the Court St. location. Today I ordered via Ubereats, a $50+ order for pickup, a simple in fact, just items that needed to be put into a bag and done. However, when I arrived to pickup my order, both older white guys behind the counter, ignored me, and kept shuffling around doing nothing. Only when a line started to form did they come to the counter and hostily ask "what do you want?" I said that I was there for my Ubereats order, to which he angrily said "what, I can't hear what your saying"...he couldn't hear what I was saying, because instead of actually standing in one spot and conversing, he was half way across the counter and I guess expected me to yell like some kind of classless person. I repeated myself, and told him that he couldn't hear because he's standing halfway across the room at the other end of the counter, he then goes "what do you want?" Again. And then goes it'll be 10 minutes...for an order that should take a few minutes, the establishment wasnt busy, and 30 minutes had already passed from the time I ordered to arriving at the store to pickup my order. I walk to the side, he then warmly greets the following 3 white guests and immediately prepares their orders. At this point I walk out, contact Ubereats and tell them to cancel the order, of which they did immediately, with a full refund. The Chocolate Room has a race and...
Read moreOwners of chocolate room, that is completely bizarre. I got a piece of cake last month and it was the normal size.. my friend who was visiting from Pittsburgh loved it so much she bought two whole cakes to bring home with her. I bought a slice on Sunday and it was smaller than normal. My mom suggested that I say something about it and I didn't. She went back to buy two pieces yesterday and mentioned it. The server gave her three slices and they were all smaller pieces.
UPDATE 5/26/22 Very Disappointed to see that the slices of their famous chocolate cake got smaller. I have been a big supporter and champion of this business since it opened. I'd rather see the same size cake for a higher price.
OLD REVIEW If you really like chocolate this is your spot. There are so many delicious things on the menu it's hard to pick. I always have the same things because I dream about their chocolate layer cake. I also dream about their banana split. So I usually get both.. They caramel eyes the bananas on the banana split and they have a wonderful hot fudge sauce and the caramel sauce and the raspberry sauce.
I may be a pig when I go there but I don't go there very often. I like to pretend it isn't around the corner from my house.
They make really good cookies as well. The flourless chocolate cake is also good. I know this because sometimes I go with more than 2 people and we order a largest selection of things. My recommendation is you go with a group and try...
Read moreMy family has loved this place for years and are always excited to make a trip there for dessert. Last Saturday (2/4) we walked in and were a bit dismayed to see an enormous line as well as a large crowd in the rear seating area. We heard scattered conversation saying they were at full capacity for the back seating area. My chops had already been sweetened for their outstanding banana split (seriously cannot rave enough about the caramel/brulee glaze they do with their bananas) and was already contemplating taking the treat to go, even though I knew it would never keep until I got home. With freezing temps the day before (6 degrees), eating outside wasn't an option for me or my lovely parents. As we approached the podium, we asked how long the wait would be for a table to free up. Brian, I assume the store manager, told us that it would be quite a while. Upon seeing our crestfallen faces, he offered to bring in a table and 3 chairs from outside and set up a small seating area right in the front, so long as we didn't mind the slight crowdedness and foot traffic in the front. We were delighted! Brian went above and beyond to make sure we had a splendid dining experience and I cannot fathom our gratitude of his thoughtfulness and kindness. Thank you so much, Brian! Our bellies were full of happiness and good desserts. You totally made our night extra special and we can't wait to...
