The fur-coated carnie coaxing passers-by into Umberto's made for a memorable experience - especially since towards the end of our dinner, he could be heard grumbling about lobsters with the lead waiter - I can only suspect he was interested in having lobster for dinner towards the end of his sidewalk schtick.
Our party of three came for dinner shortly after 9pm on a Thursday - the restaurant understandably 1/4 filled. There are numerous options on Mulberry and it WAS relatively late on a weeknight.
Third time dining here over the past twenty years - and each visit always conjurs up the headlines from early April 1972. Google "Matty the Horse" and "Joe Gallo" for more on that.
Calamari app was good - and a roving accordionist came in from the cold to serenade our table towards the end of the calamari - into the entrees themselves. It was clear that he was accustomed to frequenting the various restaurants up/down the street and after a five-spot, mosied on over to the other tables deeper in the restaurant - in front of the bar (we were seated at the fishbowl table - right by the window.)
Entrees were notably copious - and good. Son had the Red Snapper Marechiaro, Daughter had the Seafood Marechiaro and I had the Black Linguine with Shrimp and Calamari. All enormous portions - and well balanced.
I like Umberto's Clam House - it makes for an...
Read moreBeware of the SCAM the servers do with the bread. My friend & I ordered apps & the waitress asked us if we would like some bread with our apps ( we thought it was complimentary since she was the one who brought it up & asked.) When we got the check we saw that we were charged $6.95 for bread . The way she spoke to us was very misleading & gave us the impression that the bread came with the meal free of charge , but that was not the case.
At the end I asked the server if we could split the apps down the middle & pay for our dish but she cut me off & said “ NO I AM NOT GOING TO DO THAT.” I understand sometimes splitting the check can be annoying especially if it’s busy but there was only 3 other tables in the restaurant , it was NOT BUSY at all & I guess she just wanted to continue to talk to the other server at the host stand
We ended up just splitting the bill down the middle & noticed that they ADDED 20% gratuity on the check. No where on the menu or anything suggest that there even would remotely be auto gratuity added to the check. I work in a restaurant & it is a common practice to only add auto gratuity to large groups of people & even then we let the group know that auto gratuity is included in the bill. In conclusion, spending $127 here was absolutely not worth it . The clams were good & they were good about...
Read moreWent to this place grabbed by the hand 3/29/19 on the street by the manager "Tony the Nose" as he called himself when he introduces himself...Me and my friends were walking by and he sold us his sales pitch for free drinks to lure us to come in and eat there. We should have known it was bad news.
First on a Friday night after 10p, completely empty, a group of 4 were eating and we asked how was the food, they said it was ok and they blink at us (meaning it wasn't). So we figured let's give it a try. So we have drinks served and then we have Pedro as a server...talkative guy but too flirty for our taste. He was too handsy with me and unprofessional. He dedicated his night to try to get me which made me very uncomfortable.
The food was not good at all and lacks of taste, sangria was tasting like water, nothing like I had before. Also, another client came and complaint about the food and yelled inside his food and drinks sucks, this happened before we were having our plates, that was a red flag.
My advice for Tony, please hire a good chef and more professional servers. That way you do not need to go on the street to find...
