When this place opened, I knew it was an imitation of Hong Kong Supermarket but this place is certainly a very formidable competitor and it has a cooked food section that is also competing with Deluxe Food Mart simultaneously with HK Supermarket, well lets put it this way, they are doing good and their selections and prices are not that far off from HK Supermarket though much cheaper than Deluxe Food Mart.
Surprisingly as there are so many people in Chinatown either living in, near or even visiting, none of the supermarkets seem to have a loss of business that is on the negatively affected side.
The reason for the 2 stars is because they offer terrible service at the cooked food section and the supermarket is designed in such a way that it's impossible to get inside quickly when it starts getting crowed as the customers are slow to begin with. You will never find this problem so bad in any other supermarket though Deluxe food mart is almost there. On a quiet night that it's not so crowded maybe 3 stars. But I won't be coming here unless they changed at least one of...
Read moreAs with most Chinese driven stores it has its own butcher as well as a fish monger. I avoid the fish here but I have purchased their live crawdaddies as well as their crabs, both where good quality. The price was reasonable as well. Tho the fish monger is mean...and rude! The butcher on the other hand is always eager to help but watch the scale! If you ask for a 'X' amount, they will add another quarter pound without fail. This is my go to place for Chinese roast pork. They choose only the best cut of meat and then roast it off...crispy skin and juicy meat underneath...Yum. Its not overly seasoned and thats how I like it. The other roast pork (red) is at times salty. The duck is pretty good tho. The prices are higher than Chinatown but it's a half hour closer and much easier to park then Queens. As for the buffet food, its ok. For the price it's worth it. I always go for the broccoli with "beef", "beef" because there is barely any. Haha! You can find most Chinese cooking items in here. It is a...
Read moreThis is the typical Chinese frenetic, busy market. If you were thinking of a casual, stroll down wide aisle with organic vegetables and fruits with hipsters paying 3 times the cost for food…no you are not in Whole Foods. Here you navigate through old Asian ladies, Chinese people with no sense of personal space because they need that bok choy!
It is a fairly, one stop shopping if you want fresh live seafood some of which I have no idea what it is or even how I would cook it. Surly butchers at the meat section. Rows of vegetables and fruit that you may know or not know depending on your literacy. What you won’t find is gourmet cheeses, anything ‘organic’, artisanal whatever or local something here.
The weekend lines can be long but move quickly as the cashiers are fast and efficient at check-out. So Dorothy shouldn’t come here in the ruby red slippers because here she needs a good pair of worn sneakers because she’s not in...
