We ended up frequenting this not so deluxe market because the pharmacy my MIL uses gave out gift cards after x number of prescription fills.
The market is narrow but spans the block between Elizabeth and Mott St. Half of the market serves groceries and the other, cooked foods. We primarily consume at the latter, which consists of a bakery, a BBQ counter, a sushi section, and hot food counter.
Prices are generally good and competitive. But a few times we would get fooled by a few bargains. They would flip or hide the burnt side of pork and put them on clearance, only for people like me who took the bait to find out the whole thing was inedible. We have caught them cheating on non-sale items as well. For example, hiding wing tips under the duck wings, attempting to mislead by placing a case of 8 plain dumplings in front of a buffet of fried dumplings which only come with 5 pieces, etc. Every staff I have interacted with are not friendly if not outright rude, and will stiff you as if it’s their own business. The cashier lines are normally long and chaotic.
In other words, even though the prices are good, the experiences have been awful. I can really care less about this place; unfortunately, I will have to be back - thanks to the gift cards from...
Read moreHadn't realised this place existed, but was happy to find that it includes both a Chinese bakery and hot food stand (dumplings, meal boxes, etc) within the grocery store. Was especially pleased that they sell one of my favourite dim sum items - taro dumplings (AKA woo gok), it's not quite right as there should be more of a brown sauce in the filling and also dried shrimp. But I don't like dried shrimp so was happy they left that out!
Very good prices and the bakery lady even let me know it would be better value to buy 3 items than just two. Which was fine by me. Queuing is a little disorganised and people will jump in front of you given the chance.
For the popular items you'll need to go early as I previously went at the end of the day and there were no more woo goks.
Definitely will be back to try out more of the items. Once you've got your items you pay for them at cashier desks at either end of the store. You'll need ID if you're paying by credit card.
There are 2 entrances as the store runs through the block between Mott St and Elizabeth St.
I spoke in Cantonese when communicating with staff and I don't recall seeing anyone who wasn't Chinese in the store so don't know how easy it would be for a non-Chinese speaking customer to...
Read moreDeluxe Food Market is a large bazaar of cooked foods and grocery items in Chinatown. there are a lot of vendors serving up bbq meats, various savory dishes over rice, and so much more. this place is crowded and is fairly narrow given the throngs of people flowing through. the front area has mostly cooked foods. the back lower area seems to have grocery items likes vegetables, butchered meats and more. the space is pretty worn-in but kept relatively clean given the foot traffic.
wanted some light snacks, so i got some pan-fried pancakes and roasted pork rice noodle rolls. basically you select at the foods that you want and the stand packages it up and you pay at cashier located centrally in the front area. everything is packaged up neatly. the rice rolls were $3 and two pan-fried pancakes were $3. both hit the spot as i wanted some comfort food with flavor and i was not disappointed. you can definitely come here and get a full meal or family style meal to-go as most cooked items are sold by weight. definitely will come back to try some more eats as there’s so much to pick and choose from.
the staff is pretty curt and works fast bc...
