This place used to be good. It really did. In fact, my only main gripe used to be that they serve pepsi, but now, that seems minor.
We arrive on a Saturday morning around 10 and the place was about 1/3 full. We were seated promptly and then, evidently, forgotten about. 10 minutes or so later, the server approached quickly and asked what we wanted to drink and quickly scurried off. We didn't see her again for about 15 minutes. During this time, someone else brought us our drinks, which, by the time they arrived, were melty or cold. A few minutes later, the server finally decided to come and see if we were ready to order. At that point, we were about ready to leave!
My partner ordered a veggie omelet, my daughter a waffle, and I ordered a build your own breakfast with 2 eggs, medium, ham steak, and pancakes. My friend, who was also with us, ordered the same thing I did, but with sausage and biscuits and gravy. 20 minutes or so go by and the same helper who brought us our drinks brought us our food...she either didn't work there or was a day-one trainee because she had no idea what she was dishing out.
Now I've been to the Black Bear a few times and most of the time I get what I pay for, and maybe a little extra. This time, they clawed back all of that and then some. Remember above I said I ordered a ham steak? Well, I'm thinking something like you would get at Cracker Barrel or at least the Waffle House, but no...I got a ham wedge, with a good portion of it being fat -- see the photo below! Would you pay $13 for that? My eggs were cold and over easy and the pancakes were starting to harden from being under the lights. At the time of delivery, my friend asked for a glass of milk and 5 minutes later was presented with a glass 1/2 full of milk, adding to the stinginess the cooks showed with the gravy on his order -- it was almost non-existent. My partner's omelet was decent, but they forgot her side; and my daughters waffle tasted like something you would get at a Super8 along the highway.
Normally I would have asked for a manager, but due to being ignored most of the time we were there, I didn't bother. Upon checking out, the manager happened to be the one taking payment and when asked how everything was, I told him "Mediocre, at best...not that great." He laughed and said "awesome" and continued ringing me out.
Obviously the lack of care for the customer starts at the top, and until corporate addresses this issue, I...
Read moreThis experience at black bear was really unfortunate. We’ve been to black bear diners back in Houston and really enjoyed our experiences. We came in around 10:30am were sat immediately and was served by Emma. She got our order in quickly and we got a coffees and water.
The only thing we didn’t get was our food. We waited 45-50mins at 11:10am Emma apologizing saying that she thought they had put they had had re put order in. We were confused and when we had asked for clarification she let us know there was a mix up in our order. Our food was given to another table earlier and was not refired. We were not aware of this happening until after they failed to remake our order. Emma asked us what we wanted to, I asked for it to be refired thinking they would get it out pretty quickly.
10mins later were still no updates on our food. People who sat before us had already gotten their meals and some were even ready to pay. Please also mind that the restaurant was not in rush hour. There were plenty of servers waiting around the back and near the kitchen. Emma finally got back to us stating that she had only just put in our order. She let us know that it was going to take at least another 10-15 minutes. Frustrated that we were already having to waiting nearly an hour for our food and it didn’t not seem like they put a rush on our order. We decided to leave.
As we were leaving and wanted to pay for our coffee, it seemed like the whole staff knew what our situation was except for us with comments like “oh youre the table with the mixed up order” when we didn’t find out until 10 minutes prior. The lack of care and urgency to notify us of what was happening with our meals and remaking our meals made our experience at this location very...
Read moreI'd like to share a disappointing dining experience I had recently. On Father's Day, a typically busy day, we anticipated a wait and indeed spent 30 minutes before being seated. Our waitress promptly took our drink orders and returned within 10 minutes. However, after ordering simple breakfast items for six people, it took over an hour for our food to arrive. During this time, the waitress reassured us twice of a kitchen backlog, yet we noticed several parties who arrived and ordered after us were served, ate, and left in the interim. When our waitress vanished, a helpful busboy alerted the manager for us. Upon his arrival, we explained the situation and our missing waitress. When our food finally arrived, we were cautioned about hot plates, but were met with cold waffles, dry eggs, burnt bacon, and stale pancakes. Requesting the manager again, we encountered a dismissive hostess. The manager returned, seemingly unaware of the ongoing issues. We expressed our frustration with the long wait and cold food, deeming it unacceptable. He offered a re-cook or to comp the meal. We declined a re-cook, lost trust in their service, and asked to zero the bill. Leaving the food untouched except for one child, we departed for Big Bad Breakfast, where we enjoyed hot food and excellent service within 30 minutes. After such a negative experience, I have no intention of returning to Black Bear Diner in Arkansas and would give negative stars...
