This was our first time at Horst-Gasthaus, the German restaurant in North Myrtle Beach. The restaurant opens at 4PM and information online indicated there was a Happy Hour but didn't give many details. The restaurant has no website that I could find, and it took quite some time to find an online menu that was over a year old.
When we arrived a few minutes prior to 4PM, and there was a sizeable line. We would later discover that this was the Happy Hour crowd. When the doors opened and we entered, I asked for a table for two, and the hostess pointed us into the bar. She must have assumed we were there for Happy Hour? If you are there for Happy Hour, you have to sit at the bar, or at a table in the bar room, and there is a limited menu from 4P to 6P. I had to ask the bartender what the deal was, and after he straightened me out, we went back to the hostess and got seated in the dining room. I'm telling you this up front so you don't get herded into the bar and waste time like we did.
Once we got seated, everything was fine. Our waitress arrived at our table in good time, took our drink and food order, and shortly after that brought our drinks and some fresh rye bread. The rye bread was, in my opinion, incredible. Our waitress informed me that the restaurant buys it from a local bakery. One minor disappointment for me, is that there was no Dunkel (dark) German beer on tap. There was, however, plenty of choices in dark German bottled beer so a crisis was averted! Don't order the iced tea, it's terrible, probably from a powdered mix. After having been in the south for several weeks, and gotten accustomed to good southern sweet tea, the iced tea was a disappointment.
I ordered sauerbraten with spaetzle and red cabbage. My wife had the special, cabbage rolls with German potato salad and cucumber salad. We both thought our food was excellent. I've had sauerbraten in a number of German restaurants, and this was the best that I have eaten so far. We were told that the chef and/or owner is German which probably accounts for the quality of the food. We're not "foodies," we're not chefs, and we're not professional restaurant reviewers. We just enjoy the occasional meal in a German restaurant. We felt that the prices were very reasonable compared to what you find in most restaurants today. They do take reservations and you might consider that, especially if you have a large party.
Even though the restaurant had begun to fill up after our arrival, our food came out quickly. We topped off the meal by sharing some chocolate mousse for dessert which was terrific. The best part was when the check arrived and we received a 15% discount for being early birds. We would gladly come back to Horst-Gasthaus again, especially now that we know how to avoid the...

Read moreAs locals, we will not be recommending this restaurant to our out of town visitors or family members any longer. When ordering our meal, we asked our waitress which sides we could order. She told us we could order any of the sides listed on the menu, including a few options that alone would cost $0.25 more. She said “I’m not really sure why the menu is written that way because you are able to order from any of these sections” (Sides were in three different places). All of my family members ordered the spatzel because it was something we had never tried. When we got the check, we had been upcharged $2 for each meal, which doesn’t seem like a lot but made our meals almost $20 per person. The spatzel was very bland by the way and not worth the extra money. When the bill came, we questioned why the meals were marked for more than their cost, and the waitress became argumentative with my husband’s grandmother, who was not happy that the waitress seemed to lie to us about the menu and then denied it when we questioned it. We believe she was trying to find a way to increase the check to get a higher tip. She claimed she asked the manager about the charges, and that he said the menu made it clear that that side would incur an up charge (the cost is only marked as 0.25 more than the other sides for individual purchase, NOT $2). The manager didn’t even bother to come and ask us about our confusion, he just sent our waitress back to our table to say that there was no way he would remove this charge. The restaurant wasn’t even that busy, so he should have at least come over. My family has been here before, and it is unfortunate that something so stupid has ruined our outlook on this restaurant. We’re not even that upset about the upcharge, we are just upset that our waitress implied that we could order any side listed to be included and that the manager couldn’t take one minute to try to come...
