My family has been vacationing (and now living) in Myrtle Beach for years and this was one of our least favorite dining experiences to date, so it truly surprises me that there are so many great reviews for this restaurant. On a positive note, most of the food was good and the portions are ENORMOUS, but everything else about our visit was a disappointment.
The complimentary 'beans and greens' dish that is served before the meal is strange...it's just a big bowl of cold, flavorless great northern beans. No one in our party of 12 ate it. The salad that is served is a tomato and cucumber salad; this was tasty, but I know a lot of people who don't like tomatoes or cucumbers and there are no traditional salads offered on the menu. The bread served is just a loaf of plain white bread with unsalted butter. Incredibly bland, wasn't even served warm.
I would give the service and atmosphere 0 stars if that were an option. We were seated in the main dining room and the ambiance was awful. Baby pink walls, dusty fake planters hanging from the ceiling, cheap black table cloths, and plastic lawn chairs for seating. It gave off cafeteria vibes. It was so incredibly loud that we could hardly have a conversation amongst ourselves. Our server was extremely rushed during the entire meal. I asked for a few more minutes to look over the menu and he simply took the order of the person next to me and then asked me again, so I had to panic order. He never asked if we wanted drink refills or to order another bottle of wine. He kept trying to clear away plates that we were still eating from and brought out boxes for our food while we were clearly still in the middle of eating. He only asked one end of our table if they wanted coffee/dessert and when a few people said no, he quickly ran to get the check.
We came here to celebrate a birthday and considering our large group, anticipated having a nice dinner for 1.5-2 hours. I think we were there for about 50 minutes! Nothing about our dinner was pleasant or relaxing. If you're looking for somewhere to eat a giant piece of lasagna that's bigger than your head in record time, Umberto's is the place to go. But for the price point, there are hundreds of other restaurants in Myrtle Beach that will offer much better food and a more enjoyable dining experience. We could have gone to Greg Norman's instead and paid roughly the same...
Read moreWhile at Myrtle Beach visiting my parents we went to barefoot landing. After checking in with a few restaurants, learning waits were more than an hour and a half, we walked into Umberto's. The restaurant is split into two sections with the waiting area and host stand in the middle. Although the waiting area was fully packed we were surprised to see that within 5 minutes they had seated everyone who was waiting when we walked in. By the time we got to the host which took about 3 minutes, we were also seated. They get five stars for moving them in and out right off the bat. Once we sat our server Mickey explained to us that all entrees come with their three House appetizers. The first was pasta fazool, the second was a tomato salad, and the third was spaghetti in marinara. The house appetizers were amazing!!!! After that my father ordered the chicken with prosciutto and provolone, my mother ordered the eggplant parmesan, I ordered a 24 oz New York strip steak which was 4 days wet aged and cooked to perfection. I live in Philadelphia and eat in some of the nicest steakhouses in the country. This was by far and away the best steak I have ever had in 41 years of life. No exaggeration. For starters it was actually 24 oz and looked more like a dinosaur leg. Beyond that it was cooked to absolute perfection. I could not believe what I was experiencing as I continued to chew. So much so that I asked Mickey to tell the chef who cooked my steak that it was the best steak I had ever eaten. We had iced teas and lemonades, they were delicious. When all was said and done there was no room in the tank for dessert. When the bill arrived we almost fell off our chairs. It was only $125. I don't even know how that's possible, but it's true. I will be back to Myrtle Beach in September and I'm already looking forward to coming for round two. If you don't believe me check out the photos. I took detailed shots because the food was that amazing. Do not waste your time waiting in excessive lines for mediocre food. These folks are from Pittsburgh and they know how to do steak. Go right to Umberto's. Can't lose. Life-changing experience!!! One of the best restaurant experiences I...
Read moreI have been going to this establishment for 20 plus years. This year was the first issue. Food was great as usual, the drink is where the issue was! I requested a grey goose double with lime. Received the drink with lemon, did not make a stink, just drank it, said to myself...mmmmm when at home I get a little buzz of 1 double. Requested another with lime, again served with lemon, did not say a word, drank that. Was very surprised I could still speak, said ok...get me another with lime, 3rd drink came with lemon again. OK, no big deal. By this time my wife is questioning how I am still coherent after 3 double grey goose and lime...or lemon as they served. I told her several times they were watering down the drinks, if they weren't, there is no way I would be upright. With that said, I assumed they just gave me a single and left it at that, until I received the check!lol We were charged 84.00 for 3 double grey goose. Which was more water than goose, the fact that I had 3 and could still stand up says alot!. I have one double anywhere else and that is enough! I was flabbergasted that I had 3 and did not feel the effects of anything. Very disappointed that I was charged 84.00 for 3 watered down drinks. I have Been a client of theirs for over 20 years, I forgave the cockroaches prior to covid and the poor service during covid. I forgave the poor quality of food during covid and always forgave a bad night here and there because everyone has a bad night occasionally, but to water down drinks and charge a premium is a different story. As much as I hate to say this, after 20 plus years...this will be my last time at umbertoes. I enjoy their food and absolutely love their red sauce! This does not excuse 84.00 for watered down drinks, especially since I said something to the waiter after the first drink. I paid and did not say a word, hopefully it was worth a loyal client. I will now tell everyone how dishonest you are, I also may mention I am not a tourist...I am a local. I will now tell all my local friends not to go this establishment. Honesty is key to...
