To begin your Big City Cheesesteaks experience, buckle up for a visit to the sauna. Is it the sauna youād want to experience? By all means, no. Apparently 85 degrees indoors is a satisfactory temperature to enjoy your meal. If youāre preparing to order your meal in the restaurant, intend on bringing a magnifying glass to read the description of each menu option from less than 3 feet away. In fact, a telescope may be a better option if the font were any more difficult to read. Donāt be deterred, the only thing on the menu crystal clear is the picture of the ownerās family, be sure to focus on the classy kid with the sign of peace.
After ordering, prepare for a 20+ minute wait for your food in one of the few, surprisingly comfortable chairs in the restaurant. While you wait, feel free to gaze at one of the two TVs displaying seemingly cost-effective PBS channel 46 broadcasts from 1978. Otherwise, settle in and observe the details of the room you are in. It was obvious the entirety of the trim work was completed within 25 minutes with scraps, and the windows were despicably dirty for a restaurant that has been open for less than a week, despite the effort of one employee, who was attempting to clean the windows the entire duration of our visit.
Your food will be called for you to receive, and donāt expect it to be correct. In fact, in our case, another customerās food was incorrectly given to us, opened, and then subsequently swiped away by one of the cooks faster than Swiper from Dora the Explorer. This cook then re-bagged and re-served this food to another customer. Yes, you heard that right, opened food re-served to another customer. This restaurant definitely cares about public heath and safety. Luckily, thereās a doctor right next door that is a certified master of public health, consider a visit there after your experience. This definitely should make you feel confident about the meal that you are about to enjoy.
Now for the meal itself. Iāve been to Philadelphia on multiple occasions to enjoy a cheesesteak. Although reasonably tasty, this cheesesteak doesnāt compare at all in both flavor or cost. In fact, the JERSEY MIKE'S ACROSS THE STREET has a better tasting steak at a much better cost. Probably even Subwayās steak-n-cheese has a better flavor and value and at least they probably spelled āCheesesteakā correctly on their sign. (See attached)
The one positive aspect about this establishment is the availability to purchase a $250 finely-crafted chess set, but I was disappointed that an accompanying checkers set was unavailable for purchase. Regardless, enjoying your scorching steak in an unventilated, hot building seems like the perfect dining experience to me. This is what Jesus sacrificed his life for, our sins and Big City Cheesesteak. Definitely not the "Best in the Midwest," more like worst in the...
Ā Ā Ā Read more4/26/24 EDIT: Been having issues ordering online, says it opens at 10:30 AM but cannot order? Then I called and got no answer twice. I tried calling again after 11 AM and they answered, so they were open and when I asked what time do they open and was ignored. Please change the online order info on Clover to accurately reflect when you open- also update your website with the correct info as it shows open at Noon.
Going to lower my review a bit for this lackluster information. This is likely costing customers.
Wanting to go to Jersey Mikes for one of their cheesesteaks? STOP and look across the street on Calumet Ave., You NEED to give this place a try!
I just had the Big City Cheesesteak (topped with pepperjack cheese with lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, mayo) and it was amazing! Great flavor especially the steak, fresh bread and ample amount of veggies. Not dry at all and not cheap on the meat. Their prices are competitive with Jersey Mike's and their sandos are huge.
I ordered online and they said it would take 30 min but it was ready sooner when I arrived for pickup. It was plenty hot when I got home to enjoy.
Also had a side order of onion rings which were okay- kinda got soggy, likely due to the steam in the bag, but obliviously not the main star here. Would want to try their steak fries and their wings look good with fair pricing compared to competitors.
If I had a slight criticism, it would be for service since the woman at the front didn't give a warm reception when they advertise a welcoming environment but eh who cares about that when the food is STELLAR!
Please give this place a try and support a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWithout a doubt, hands down, BEST cheesesteaks. I always get the BigCity Cheesesteak with fries and a steak egg roll. I will say, Iāve read a lot of the reviews including the not so great ones and I will say, Iāve never had an issue with the staff or the food. People are so quick to write a negative review but never go out of their way to write positive ones. This is why positive reviews are so necessary. If youāre thinking about coming to BCC donāt let the negative reviews sway your choice on coming here. Iāve never had an issue with the steak being dry, Iāve also never had an issue with the staff and since Iāve found the place Iāve become a regular. Iāve actually had the staff go above and beyond for me, specifically Kyra. But all of the staff is amazing. As someone whoās worked in the service industry, no, the customer is not always right. People are so quick to judge how ārudeā the staff is but have they sat down with themselves and looked to see if maybe they came off rude at first? I agree as a cashier you have to suck it up and take people being rude sometimes but no one ever wants to look and see if they came off a certain way first. Last thing Iād like to add, why write a bad review after one bad experience? I guarantee a lot of the people who sit down and write these bad reviews continue to go to McDonaldās or whatever their favorite FF place is and donāt write a review and continue to give those places chance after chance. So why not a small business? Give this place a chance. Maybe a few. I...
