Update 6/25: we’ve returned to give Uncle Bo’s another try after our last very disappointed visit with our out of town friends. Thankfully the chef (may be the chef had a day off during our last visit) made my favorite Mauna dish much like before. I’m not sure why the same dish was tasteless the last time that embarrassed me in front of my out of town friends after I boasted how good the Mauna was at Uncle Bo’s. Update: we’ve returned with friends from mainland. I wanted to introduce to them my favorite fish: Mauna Kea. This time it wasn’t as good as before. The mash potato was good, but the baked fish itself didn’t have the exact texture as I remembered from prior visits. A bit of disappointment. We also ordered a few other happy hour items, such as Kuala pig slider (they were okay), garlic shrimps (decent) and ube beignets (very good) . We haven’t been here for more than four years and the food tasted even better than I remembered. I had the Baked Opah Mauna Kea (local baked white fish). It was tender and full of flavors. It was the best baked fish I had anywhere, not just on Oahu. The vegetables were fresh and tasty. The smash potato was very buttery and excellent. Finally, a big thanks to our server, Ryan, who was friendly and knowledgeable. Hope I won’t have to wait another four years before I return.

In a recent family dinner at Uncle Bo’s, we were pleasantly surprised by the menu’s notable changes. While local pupus were still available, the entrees had undergone a significant transformation. The majority of the available dishes were Italian-inspired pasta dishes. We opted for the fried calamari pupu, which remained similar to what we had before. The rest of our dinner consisted of pasta dishes, including chicken marsala, chicken piccata, chicken Alfredo, and Uncle Bo’s Seafood Catch. The chicken marsala resembled linguine with brown gravy, mushrooms, and asparagus, and not a chicken marsala dish that I’m traditionally used to. The chicken piccata and chicken Alfredo lacked flavor, and the sauces appeared diluted. All the white sauces tasted the same , bland and watered down. The seafood catch was okay. There was nothing local offered as an entree, and the whole menu seemed revamped and wish I could say it was for the better. For dessert, we indulged in the warm fudged brownie à la mode and fried ice cream, both of which were excessively sweet due to their generous toppings of whipped cream. The highlight of our family's Sunday dinner was the bingo night, which provided an enjoyable and lively atmosphere.

The 3 stars are just in principle we have been to Uncle Bo’s on numerous occasion. As usual the food was excellent our server was awesome it was a party of 12. Because our party was large our server forgot to put in our entrees everyone mostly ordered pupus. This was understandable as I said it was a large party. When I reminded the server that we never got our food he apologized and got on it. He came back around and said we wouldn’t be charged and we were grateful for that. The food was not on the ticket when they bought it out as expected. Then the server came back and said the manager made a mistake we have to charge you for refills. 1. He never told us there was a.charge for refills (info not on menu either) I and we have never paid for refills.. 2. Our food would have been about $30 and that’s exactly what we were charged for drinks. 3. No one else at the table although they had more than 2 refills were charged for refills, which is why I know this was to recoup for the food. I wanted to dispute but I didn’t because either they would have took care of it or charged the rest of the party for their refills. This was really unfair I would rather we had just paid for the food than to do this to get over. Do you think we would have ordered $30 worth of refills had we known we’re paying for it the drinks were mostly ice which is why we asked for refills in the first place. It’s just not the way to do things either you’re fair or your not.

UPDATE **

I just wanted to report that Uncle Bo’s management reach out and they were understanding of how there may have been miscommunication and made it right. Truly appreciated it because they didn’t have to. I will continue to be a patron and keep sending people...

While our service was decent, I am very sorry to write that this was probably the worst meal I have ever had, inspiring this review. The menu looked promising for our large group, offering a variety of items, which led us to mistakenly believe there would be “something for everyone”. Going through the dishes: 1) Hummus - not recognizable as hummus, tasted like a coarse mixture of sawdust, chickpeas and garlic powder, 2) Nachos - their signature dish slathers fried wonton chips, Kalua pork and Spam cubes in an overly sweet, sticky teriyaki sauce, 3) fish and chips - 4 small fish strips (each the size of a standard mozzarella stick) with a boatload of steak fries to add volume, not sure if the fish was previously frozen, 4) Seafood Pasta - overcooked, extremely soggy linguine covered in creamy but tasteless sauce, again not sure the freshness of the seafood, 5) Loco Moco - added too much water to the powdered sauce mix that covers the factory-formed burger patties/mushy rice resulting in another tasteless creation, 6) Hair in the salad, salad dressing quite sour. Overall we were taken aback as a group at how low the quality of food was. It is very unfortunate because the people in there were very nice, but it really was a waste of a precious meal for all of us. The dining chairs should have tipped us off - their quality mirrors the quality of the food and the tattered state they are in made me afraid to sit down, which we did against our better instincts. The silver lining is that because we were so unsatisfied after barely touching our lunch, we consequently had room to enjoy some shave...

Went here because it had the best reviews of all the dine-in restaurants in North Shore and it was shockingly disappointing. My boyfriend and I ordered the ribeye steak and the fish tacos and both had no seasoning whatsoever, it’s like salt and pepper is a foreign concept to this restaurant. We also got the spinach dip appetizer and they give wonton chips instead of normal tortilla chips, which are much more fatty so after a couple bites you start to feel a little sick.

As for the entrees, for the price that they cost, you’d expect them to do the bare minimum seasoning on their food. The steak had no flavor and the tacos had an insane amount of filling to the point where it was overflowing onto the plate with every bite and getting all over my hands. I’ve never had tacos or any kind of dish cause that big of a mess (and the taste was less than average which makes it worse). The toddler sitting at the table next to us must have been confused seeing an adult eat messier than herself and any other child she’s eaten with.

The only reason I give this place two stars instead of one is due to the dessert we had, which was the fried ice cream and that was delicious. Was it worth it to pay $100+ just for the ice cream though? No, of course not. I would even go as far as saying that the cost of food here compared to the flavor is almost criminal. There’s much better food at a lot of other places and I would even recommend hitting the Kakaako farmers market that’s open every Saturday to get delicious food. I had a $5 taco from there that was better than the ones I...
