Nostalgia nowhere! Ahhhh if you’re looking for the Frosty’s of your past this is not it sadly. I haven’t been back to OI since 2016 and to say I was looking forward to a trip to Frosty’s was an understatement! I never, in a million years, thought I’d need to look it up on the internet to see if it was still there. So, I received quite a shock upon arrival. No offense to the current owners but honestly I wish it had a different name to go with the “new” place. When you say “Frosty’s” and Oak Island they always go together and everyone knows exactly where you’re talking about. Frosty’s was a requirement for my family as part of any trip to OI. It was on the agenda and it was something we never missed! Most years I could convince the family to go more than once! Part of the charm of Frosty’s was all the cute little Knick knacks and the coziness of the environment whether from the assortment of sea shells to cute little round tables that filled up fast! Some might have called it “cluttered” but to me it was “homey” and I knew whenever we went I’d be leaving with some special trinket in addition to a belly full of amazing ice cream! Was the new place bad you might ask… nope not at all… the young girl working was extremely nice and helpful, the ice cream tasted great according to my kids and husband (sounds weird but I think the reason it just tasted good, not great, to me was I was so disappointed) and it was clean and had a lot of indoor seating. However, if you’re looking for special trinkets like seashell necklaces and stuffed turtles you won’t find anything here besides ice cream and T-shirts. The atmosphere today is more of a modern place where people just go and have ice cream as an afterthought. The original Frosty’s was a family oriented place that served amazing ice cream with a story, parents had to watch out for sticky fingered kiddos picking up the Knick knacks but it was a given that said kiddos would, more likely or not, leave with a new trinket. Ahhhh… some things are better left unchanged. I read all the recent reviews and I am only writing this because I would like to suggest it having a different name. The first time oak island visitors are experiencing great customer service and amazing ice cream and that is great and I wish the new owners success but it hurts my heart to still have it be named Frosty’s. To those of us that are the “originals”hear Frosty’s and this is not what we know to be Frosty’s. Thanks for reading! Best of luck to the new owners! Wendy and Alan...
Read moreOur family has been returning here year after year since they originally opened. The magic of this place was the owners and the feeling of family and the simple life it embodied. Every year we would look back at pictures of our family over the years and always made sure to get a new one taken with Alan and Wendy. We loved the simple charm, the delicious ice cream and catching up with old friends. We were saddened to visit this evening and see that our family tradition was now gone. Even though it was a Saturday, we found a dark building and a handwritten sign stating they were closed Saturday and Sunday. Peering inside and now looking online, I’m astonished by an interior and ambiance that is as cold as the ice cream itself. Plain white walls, not a single picture or painting and certainly no remaining memories of what was. Like a piece of our family story permanently erased from existence. Such is life and we will find a new home for family ice cream on these hot summer nights, but it will not be this cold remnant of the original frosty’s. To keep the name and pretend it has any connection to the original is disingenuous and is void of respect. Start fresh, give it a new name, this is...
