Ate here for the first time for Three days while here for a week. The first day the place was packed out. We were told 45 min wait. We were seated in 25 mins. We were served not long after being seated. Our server was Shelby. She was very friendly and attentive to our order. We read mixed reviews about this place. But our experience was great thankfully. We are a mixed raced Hispanic/Black family and was made to feel welcomed each time we visited here. The breakfast food was all good. Bacon Eggs grits rye toast omelette etc was all good! Loved the grits!! The second day we waited a while before anyone acknowledged us. At first was a bit concerned because I didn’t see any of the staff that served us the first day. But eventually a kind woman apologized for the wait and sat us down and we were served right away. That day we received our check before our food which stuck us as odd. That did not happen the first day. But I noticed this server (Didn’t get her name) gave everyone their check before they received their food so I didn’t take offense. To me that sends a wrong signal to a guest when you give a bill before you are served in all my years eating out. Maybe it’s me. No biggy! Just saying! Food was good again on day two.
Day three Shelby was back and remembered us, but we were served by the Spanish woman (can’t think of her name now sorry). She also was very kind and accommodating/fast. Food was again excellent. I would definitely eat here when we visit Oak Island Beach again. They are good people in this place. Just maybe finding their groove still yet when it comes to acknowledging new guest walking in and clearing tables quicker to seat the next guest. In my observation of what needs improvement. But when they do get their groove - they will be a force to be reckoned...
Read moreWe are not locals but do have a home on the island. We were looking forward to trying The Break. There was a wait when we arrived on Sunday Morning during the off season but it went fairly quickly. We have a young son and the kids menu was very limited. We ended up ordering a waffle for him. I was pleasantly surprised it was a Belgium waffle versus a skinny waffle like so many restaurants serve. I also liked that they offered "Hippie Bowls" with yogurt, fresh fruit, and local Hippie Chick Granola. That is a great option for those who are trying to eat a bit healthier while supporting another small local business! That very much impressed me. They were fairly busy and our server tried to keep up but it was a lot. I didn't see too many servers so the staffing may be an issue. Our food was ok. That is really all I can say. Not overly memorable but not terrible. I was very unimpressed that the bill was left on our table before we even received our food. I felt like leaving the bill is a way to not have to go back to the table and deal with the guests. Overall, I saw good and not so good points to The Break. I think we may need to try it again and see if the experience is...
Read morePlaced a take-out order totaling $12.81. I paid $20 cash. I was given $7 in change. I asked about my 19 cents. The waitress seemed to be taken back that I asked and responded that they always just round it off. She asked if I really wanted the change to which I responded "who wouldn't?". She said she'd have to go in the back to get the change since there's none up front at the register. The waitress who took my order came back to the register and was told of my request for the rest of my change. She responded no problem and promptly opened the register for my change. Tells me the other waitress lied to me. I'm also confused about the part of rounding off to prevent dealing with change. Taking someone's money without their permission is STEALING!! Why does this establishment think this is an okay practice? I get home hoping to at least enjoy a good breakfast that I over-payed for. Nope. Omelet was bland and sausage was worse than it looks, without flavor and dry as a desert. $12 for such a small amount of food that lacks flavor served by employees who steal my...
