First, let me preface this review with a few things. My sister works there as a waitress, so I didn't rate the service based on any service my sister gave me, but only on the service I have received when she was either not working that day, or all of her tables were full and I was seated in another location. In most cases, the employee that served me was unaware that I was family until the end of the meal.
Second, when it comes to food, I have friends in the food industry, and it has been stated by a pro chef friend who has cooked for 3 presidents, numerous sultans, and had his own tv show on the food network, that my steak is the absolute best steak he has ever had in his life. I'm pretty sure I have a good handle on food quality/taste.
That said, I've eaten at the Broken Yolk on numerous occasions. In most cases, I like to try something different, as you never know what you might find you like that you didn't expect.
I've had a dish or two that I wasn't so hot about, but it was something I hadn't liked at other places in the past, and thought that perhaps their version would be better. Just wanted to expand my taste.
That said, what I like that I tried, they did a first class job. Their guacamole burger was awesome, their avocado breakfast burrito was incredible, and they are not stingy on the costly ingredients. Their prices are a bit higher than ihop/Denny's, but with the average entree running under $10, the difference in price in negligible.
They only serve breakfast and lunch, so I haven't tried any of their alcoholic beverages, and wouldn't expect them to be first class at any rate, considering their primary crowd isn't the evening crowd, so I'll skip that aspect.
As for service (outside of my sister), just the other day I ate there, and asked for a medium rare burger. The guys made two mistakes. One, they under-cooked my burger, so it was barely rare in the middle portion, and two, they forgot the guacamole. The waiter that delivered the burger found out immediately that it was missing the guacamole and within less than a minute, had a large portion of guacamole for me to apply at my leisure. Unfortunately, little did he, or the cooks realize, when they had grabbed that large scoop, an avocado seed was in that scoop (it's often habit for restaurants to leave 1 or 2 avocado seeds in their guac. It helps maintain the color of the guac). As soon as I pointed it out, they replaced it almost immediately.
After all of that was said and done, and even though I get the family discount every time I go, the manager got wind of my problems with my meal, took the receipt from me and told me I didn't owe a dime. He told me that in his opinion, that situation is unacceptable, even though I have eaten there more than a dozen times and not had that problem before, and this particular day/time, they were packed with every table full.
Even if my sister didn't work there, and I didn't get a family discount, I would still attend there frequently. That service alone leaves you to believe that they mean business when it comes to making sure your food is good, and on every other encounter, I had not been...
Read moreWe ordered via UberEATS. My fiesta burrito is supposed to have shredded beef. I ate 1/4 of the burrito and it was all egg.
My husband ordered steak & eggs, sunny side up with English muffins. He received scrambled eggs on the bottom of his sunny side up eggs and toast.
We notified UberEATS and they said the order is not eligible for a refund and we needed to contact the store. Contacted the store and they said we needed to go through UberEATS. The manager on duty said she was in the back when they were packing up orders - she told them one of the steak and eggs had a different side but was unaware that they had put the right eggs on top of the wrong eggs. She said they were unusually busy today.
We live 30mins away - she said she is unable to give us a refund but can make a new order, we'd have to go pick it up. I advised that we do not have time to pick up, which is why we used UberEATS. I was hoping to have a fast lunch/brunch with my husband before I had to leave for Temecula. She said she was sorry but she could not refund us - we would have to talk to UberEATS, which just tells us we need to talk to the store.
My husband finally says he'll pick up, please have the order ready - she continues to say if we cannot go today, we can get a discount for another day IF we eat there. He again says he's on his way to pick up. She responds with "okay ma'am" and hangs up before he can tell her that he is not a ma'am.
Provided really poor service for something that was THEIR mistake, with no real resolution, instead cause an inconvenience. They don't let you talk, they constantly interrupt with excuses.
We will not be returning. We were really excited to try the rest of their menu at a later time, but this experience has left a bad taste...
Read moreThis morning my girlfriend asked me after a drunken night of shenanigans what I wanted for breakfast. Without hesitation I responded "The best food in Oceanside". With even less hesititation she replied "Oh that's easy! The Broken Yolk is THE best food around". Off we go. We arrived and I kid you not, we didn't have time to find a seat. The service was IMMEDIATE. Up walks Jody. Listen folks. If you come here, you need to request Jody by name. She was...so in tune with our needs. All four of us ate well the portions are massive and the price is perfect. But Jody made this experience incredible for us and we will come back from 3hrs away just to see her again and enjoy the meals prepared for us. The food was ready so quick, I ordered the steak and eggs, my girlfriend got the chilequiles, we had the chicken fried steak and the American breakfast. So good. You really can't go wrong here. But Jody's customer service skills are some of the best I've seen in my 20 something years of dining. She was responsive, intuitive and attentive. Her suggestions for meals were so on point. She has a great personality. You can tell she loves working there and providing genuine service to customers is her trademark. We all thoroughly loved Jody and when we return if she's not there, it will take away from the entire experience. She is THE model for customer service and will make ANYONE, LOVE, the The Broken Yolk. If the owner and manager reads this stuff, be sure to take care of Jody, great customer service is so hard to find and she truly stands above the rest! Also, Carlie was great in her assisting role. Thank you Broken Yolk!!! Whomever hired...
