My aunt who lives in Wisconsin told me Mission BBQ is their favorite BBQ joint where they live. When they told me how great it is, I was excited when I looked them up and saw one was coming to Oklahoma City.
After our first visit today I do not share the same enthusiasm.
The building and decor is very nice. I like the veteran theme and the memorabilia on the walls. Everything was clean and presentable. Two thumbs up so far!
The problems started when we got to the counter. Things went downhill from here. The girl who took our order was not rude, but she was not especially friendly either. Her tone was short and she just wanted to get the order in. When you're in the service industry, a smiling, friendly face and making customers feel welcome is part of defining your success. Like I said, she wasn't rude - the best way to describe it is we felt like we were irritating her. Gee, sorry we came in and interrupted you doing your job.
Everyone has bad days, so nothing unforgivable yet. The food was the final test. Compared to the local options we've had in the city for decades, this BBQ does not even come close to competing. I got baby back ribs and brisket (half point and half from the flat). The brisket had a nice smoke ring and good bark. But all the proteins were way overcooked. Every last bit of moisture was cooked out including from the point (moist) part of the brisket. When something is that overcooked you're better off not serving it and using it for beans. At least find some way to repurpose it rather than serving it to a customer. Every bite I took was dry. Now I know why they put six bottles of BBQ sauce on every table, because you're going to need it get the dry meat down.
The baby back ribs were the worst. I got the bones from the skinny end of the rack it was more like jerky than a delicious rib. They had very little flavor, no smoke ring, and tasted like they were cooked in an electric smoker for a few hours and then finished in an oven. They did not taste how a BBQ rib should taste.
I did like the beans and the mac and cheese. The sides were the best part of the meal. Regarding the six sauce bottles on the table, you would think with that much variety there would be at least one that we really liked. They were all just okay, none of them really stood out as something special.
There are many well established BBQ places in OKC that have proven to serve great BBQ. Stick to those and don't be...
Read moreMy wife and I recently tried the new Mission Barbecue in Oklahoma City, and we were not disappointed. I ordered the three-meat platter so I could sample the various types of meat they offered. I chose the jalapeño cheese sausage, turkey, and brisket, while my wife opted for the five-bone pork ribs. For sides, we selected French fries and cheesy potatoes, and although my wife wanted to try the broccoli salad, we ended up not ordering it. Since the restaurant wasn't busy at the time—caught between the lunch and dinner crowd—our meals were brought directly to our table. Normally, they would call your name, and you would pick up your order.
On the table, there were six different barbecue sauces, all of which were delicious. Our favorite was the KC Original.
All the meats were fantastic. The brisket was moist, the jalapeño cheese sausage was wonderful, and the turkey was tender and flavorful. We received six slices of turkey, four pieces of sausage, and a generous portion of chopped brisket. The pork ribs were so tender that they fell off the bone. We had brought hand wipes, thinking we would need them to clean our fingers, but a fork was all we required. The French fries were good, though nothing special. The cheesy potatoes were delicious, and to our surprise, a serving of broccoli salad was included for us to try, which we found delightful.
Overall, since this restaurant is close to our home, we plan to return frequently. Our meal cost just a little over $50, and we brought home enough food for another meal tomorrow. When you divide the overall cost between two meals for two people, it averages out to $12.50 per person, which is about the average cost of a restaurant meal—not bad at all. Welcome to Oklahoma City, Mission Barbecue. We are glad you chose...
Read moreI hardly ever leave reviews but this BBQ establishment hit me in a different way. First off, the food is absolutely fantastic. A+ all the way. Secondly and I think this is a critical factor in the rating for the atmosphere is the military & first responder theme of the restaurant. Everywhere you look in the restaurant you see unit/department patches, to pictures of first responders and service members. It really gives you the sense of proudness and thankfulness for every one of them. As an additional topper, we sat and started eating our food around 11:50am and once 12:00pm hit, the TVs switch to a waiving American flag, a voice comes over the loud speakers and asked everyone to stand for the singing of our national anthem. Everyone stopped eating, the staff stopped cooking, peeping and taking orders and we all stood there signing along with the national anthem. I have never seen a restaurant do that before and it was awesome. It was a true patriot and American touch to some good ol’ American BBQ. I have told so many people about it and recommended all my current and veteran buddies visit and check it out. My wife and I loved it and even though it’s a good 20 minute drive from us, we will be back...
