Popped into Borough Bagels this morning. I ordered an everything toasted with butter and scallion schmear (requested thick). The young lady told me they don't toast their bagels and tried to tell me they were "like NY bagels". Well, I grew up in Jersey and bagels were a staple. These bagels were half the size of a good NY/NJ bagel and weren't warm (point of toasting is to help melt the butter--and they DO toast in Jersey and Manhattan if you ask). The lady started putting schmear on and I had to stop her because, in my initial request, I had asked for butter and schmear on both sides. So, she, begrudgingly, cut another bagel and applied butter and schmear to both sides, put the two pieces together, wrapped it in the paper and handed it to me without even a "here you go". Yeah, I'm from Jersey but even we have some level of polite. I walked out and when I opened the wrapper, I discovered she had given me the two BOTTOMS! And there was barely any schmear on it. Honestly, these aren't close to a NYC bagel. Some people may say they are, but I'm not agreeing. I applaud them trying, but it fell short on many levels for me, including the customer service and atmosphere. The bagel inside was good, but not the same. Anyways, I gave them a try but won't be back. The ones at the Fred Meyer bakery are better IMO...take this review...
Read moreHave been excited to check this place out. Ordered a bagel with lox. They had me pay up front. After I paid (and tipped!), the people behind the counter were standing around chatting about the guys across the street washing cars. I thought they were waiting for my bagel to toast. Nope. The car wash was more interesting than making the food that I already paid for and was standing there waiting for. There were no other customers. Finally one person did start making the bagel. They didn't toast it at all. They used two separate pairs of gloves to make the food!?I don't know how any bagel place doesn't toast the bagel. That's what makes it delicious, the cream cheese all melty on the hot bagel. The bagel was nothing special, kind of bready, though they only had poppyseed and pumpernickel. Not good enough to bother coming back. If you want an awesome bagel, San Francisco Street bakery makes an awesome lox deluxe bagel. They toast...
Read moreThis place delivers, it is not just hype. The bagels are the absolute best bagels I have EVER eaten. Crispy on the outside with the perfect chewiness on the inside and bursting with flavor all around.
I will say they lose a little luster for me with their sizing. They are pretty small bagels, especially for $2.25 a piece. Which makes this place a treat, not a typical stop that it might otherwise be.
They have several different flavors to choose from (plain, cinnamon raisin, salt, everything, sesame, and poppyseed). THEY ARE ALL EQUALLY DELICIOUS. The cream cheese schmears are also very, very, very good. I love the scallion!
I havent' tried the breakfast or lunch sandwiches yet but I am looking forward to working my way through the menu.
They sell out so come early and snag your bagels. You won't be...
