I'm from out of town and I was lucky to visit The Berry & Rye when it opened 10 years ago when they did crafted drinks with smoke infusion. That was an experience once in a life time. Last night I revisited this bar and was swept over with feelings of nostalgia. I was also very comforted and admirable of a cozy warm atmosphere. The music was a personal selection of the bartender and was perfect. I'm in town for my parent's rapidly declining health and being with them is very difficult because I haven't personally experienced a parent passing away until now. So I wanted to stall coming home and relax at the Rye. I also have a unique art hobby of drawing on napkins that I've developed over 20 years. I previously left my drawing supplies in my car so I got permission from the bartender to draw while having a drink. As I was returning to the Rye from getting my drawing supplies the bartender was waiting outside to intercept me to randomly, suddenly tell me he changed his mind and I wasn't welcome. I had no idea what I did and he wouldn't tell me. He just had on a very defensive front and wanted me to leave. I left without objection and did a little bit more exploring of downtown Omaha and decided to finally head home for the evening. When I got home dad was awake and struggling as he was very uncomfortable. But we couldn't do anything to help him. All night he was calling out for help and it was a very rough night. So, 10 years ago the Rye was an amazing experience. But last night the Rye was only a prequel to a...
Read moreWe had such an unfortunate experience while visiting Omaha. We had a long day and was wrapping up with some bar hopping and found this which was going to be the last stop of the night. My friend asks for the bill for three drinks and when he gets it- we realize that we were charged twice for one of the beverages. No big deal, must have been a mistake- we asked for another review and the server cancels the first transaction. She brings it out again and we realize that the drink was then upcharged another $4. She hadn’t communicated why the drink was suddenly more expensive than the first bill which felt like they were padding the bill and therefore their tips. Unfortunate and sour way to end our night.
Besides that experience- the atmosphere was super chill and is structured more like a lounge than a bar with couches and small cocktail tables. Regardless- there are so many other unique places to explore in the area- I would recommend just skipping this one and finding others.
In response - had we received a bill for two drinks at the price it should have been, we would have asked for a review of the bill and walked away happy. Given that we had two circumstances that required our attention with the bill specifically, I find that the circumstances are too coincidental to stand alone. It felt shady. If it truly is poor communication - that's one thing, but it appeared to have been more than just poor...
