We've given this place 3 separate attempts to like it, based on positive feedback from friends. The 1st time we came, it was 2 hours until closing time and the available (limited) staff were rude and acted like we were inconveniencing them for coming in. We sat down at the bar and ordered food and a drink anyway because we were hungry, and understand people have bad days. The guy bar tender/server's attitude lightened up a little once we started making conversation but he was extremely rude to others who came in after us, ignored folks standing at the door waiting to be seated. The food was ok, it's bar food and typical of most places like this; sandwiches, fries, etc. Food and drinks were quite pricey for what it was too. 2nd attempt was a weekday morning, we came in for breakfast and it was mildly busy. We waited by the front door to be seated, with numerous staff walking by us, and even looking at us (and a few others waiting) and they didn't even acknowledge any of us were standing there waiting, such as letting any of us know they'd be right with us, etc. We stood there for nearly 10 minutes, being ignored before we, and a few others waiting, just left. We decided we'd never try them again after that kind of service until the other day when we were again in downtown OC and starving. I said, let's give them another shot. People have their days. 3rd attempt, we were greeted and seated quickly by a nice waitress, ordered and received our coffees really fast and got our breakfast order in pretty quick too. Food came, and what I ordered had a massive chunk of animal fat in the mixture that made me spit my entire bite out, and I lost my appetite for the rest of it from that point. I've made, and ordered a lot of this type of meal from many places over the years and never bitten into a giant piece of gristle like that. Very off-putting. My partner's meal wasn't any better, and when I brought it to the servers attention they tried to get him to order something else, and we'd both lost our appetites. They said they'd comp the meal, which they did, but the tab still somehow came out to over $40 for 2 coffees and 1 meal, each cup of coffee (that we only had 1 refill on) was $4.50 each. After that, the server disappeared and we didn't see them again, even when I went to pay, I stood there for over 5 minutes at the bar waiting for someone to acknowledge me so I could pay the bill. Our server was busy talking very intimately with another customer at the seat by the front door. Another server finally came out of the kitchen to help and went to get our servers attention to pay the tab. The location is great, however the staff and service is really hit or miss and the food is the same. Sadly it feels like yet another business in the area that relies heavily on friends and family for support, while they treat new folks and people who give feedback about their products and service, like they don't matter. We won't be returning, and will not be editing this review, even with a nice or nasty owner response (as they've clearly done with others here). Do better, the restaurant industry is a tough one and, bad news...
Read moreMelissaGergen 2 Pending review NOT SAFE for Food ALLERGIES! they lie NOT SAFE FOR FOOD ALLERGIES: A review I read said that this place served Gluten Free Chicken Fried Steak. I have Celiac Disease, so this would be quite the treat. Told the waiter that I have Celiac Disease explained, I'm allergic to Gluten. Asked him if the review was True as I doubted it to be. He assured me it was true, that the Chicken Fried steak and the gravy were Gluten Free. Even went on to tell me that the Owner, Ranee tried to have lots of options. The menu didn't Say GF so I brought that up as another doubt. He again assured me it was. I repeatedly asked him if he was certain, even when the food arrived. To which he chuckled and said, Yes, I'm certain it's safe. After eating what was too good to be GF, I asked if they would share the recipe for the breading on the steak or at least the ingredients. He then told me that it was purchased that way and in a box. So I asked him if he could get the ingredients from the box and the brand. When he came back he gave me the brand, but said their weren't ingredients on the box. I've worked in industrial kitchens, there is always ingredients on the box. By this point, I already new the truth as my body was beginning to react. Luckily my daughter had some medication that could counter some reactions. The company they buy these steaks from do NOT offer it in a Gluten Free version. I went home where I rested the day away, was super sick by the next day. I sent Ranee an email regarding this mis-hap in hopes she would just talk to her employee's about taking these things more seriously. It's now been over a week later and she has yet to even reply back to apologize and let me know if she did anything about this. I've been to my Dr. as I've had some very serious side affects from this. This place served me more gluten in one sitting than I have had in 15 years. This wasn't just a trace contamination which should have been the only risk I could have been facing eating at a none GF facility. I was lied to, not once but multiple times. This could have been avoided if the server would have just checked with the cook before assuring me multiple times that it was safe for me. I wasn't vague about my allergy with him. I would at this point deem this place to not be safe at all for anyone with any food allergies! Stay away from this place if you have any food allergies.

Read moreProbably not going here again due to negligence and rude service. We’ve been here once before with no problems, but this time was bad. First, one of our group members put us on the wait list this morning and then told them we were waiting right outside because we didn’t want to be packed inside the entrance like sardines with the rest of the people waiting. They told us they would clean the table to the right of the entrance and we could sit there and that they’d call our name. So as we’re waiting outside in the cold, we look over and notice other customers are suddenly sitting at that table. So we go inside and tell them we’ve been waiting for awhile. The host claims they called out our name but we were literally right outside the door and nobody opened it to call anyone’s name. So he hurries to fix his mistake and scrambles to get us another table (pushing out another small group of people that they just started taking back to a table instead to make room for us). So we finally get seated, and our waiter comes to the table and says, “Can I get you all something from the bar?” But immediately looks and points straight at ME (the only female at the table) and says “but I’ll need to see your ID first.” JUST MINE. Not either of the other two people I’m with? He didn’t need to see their ID’s? I understand I look a little young and coincidentally I did forget my ID in my snowboarding jacket at home, but I wasn’t even going to order anything at the bar, and I’m 27. I understand it’s a bar, but they didn’t even ask for my ID the last time we were here. I actually offered it to them after I ordered my drink last time. So because I had forgotten to put my ID back in my wallet (yes, this is my bad), the waiter had the audacity to say I could drive home and get it and bring it back, while the two guys I’m with can stay at the table. Are you frikken kidding me? The people I was with didn’t want to wait that long so we ended up going down the road to the Rivershore restaurant and got a table almost immediately and had some amazing food. I probably won’t be going back to Ranee’s, because I felt very singled out and embarrassed. I understand I forgot my ID, but shouldn’t they have tried to check everyone’s ID, not just mine? I was literally going to order a soda, not...
