I have to admit Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is a welcome flavorful divergence from the fried wings, fingers, strips, filets and nasty nuggets, offered at every fast-food chain and gas station with a fryer.
The Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is an enormous building (for a fast-food joint), attractively theme decorated inside and out. They must be thinking that they will sell chicken, at a volume comparable to Taylor Swift concert tickets. They have a large parking lot. A to-go order pick up window and two drive through lanes. They might do well in their location. When school starts, I bet the sweet sticky chicken nuggets will draw a crowd. The kids will love âem.
The standard meal comes with two very bland sides: plain white rice and equally tasteless macaroni. I ordered a small Kilauea chicken, no rice, a side of steamed vegetables, pineapple and a Spam Musubi. (Who doesnât like Spam!). The meal came with the macaroni. The vegetables, well okay, not as attractive on the tray as in the picture, but a better tasting option than plain white rice. The Kilauea chicken was a good portion for a small, basically a slightly spicy version of the Hui Hui. The fresh pineapple goes well with the meal, delicious. A fork full of macaroni with a chunk of Kilauea chicken blended nicely, improving the macaroni. It was a fairly good meal. The best though was the Spam Musubi. I got a small packet of the Pineapple BBQ sauce from the server. On the Spam Musubi it is the bomb. I could make a meal of a couple or three of these alone. The Pineapple BBQ sauce would have to be good on the restaurantâs roast pork. Future visit.
I think the novelty of the new chicken will go well for a while, but the limited bland sides will soon become monotonous to the Okie palete, that is tuned to burgers and migrating more and more to Mexican food. A few additions to the sides offered, would help. Is there a Hawaiian version of fried okra? Luau tacos?

Read moreMy family and I went for dinner. I'm from SoCal and there, we have really good authentic Hawaiian food. What threw us was the kiosks to order and to pay for the food. My husband HATES these things, me too. Takes jobs away from humans. My daughter and her fiance used one and sai its not user friendly. There was a young lady there that helped my husband and I. Very helpful and very nice. Best part of being there, having human interaction with her. The food was okay here. I had the Honolulu chicken and it was on the salty side. At other Hawaiian restaurants, they serve cabbage on top of rice, underneath chicken or other protein, this didn't. There was TOO much rice. You had a side of rice plus chicken on top of another pile of rice. The macaroni salad was okay. I've had much better. My daughter's fiance had the spam musubi, he liked it, daughter did not. It was served in factory plastic, apparently not freshly made. My family liked the food but not with enthusiasm of great food. We all said we'd go back and each try something different. The place was very clean in a very contemporary setting with Hawaiian music playing in the background. It seemed a little sterile in there though. If you've never had authentic Hawaiian food, you may very well enjoy the food, just don't mistake this as excellent food that even Los Angeles has served. I am willing to go back, I love...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I tried hawaiian bros for thr first time not knowing what to except and it did not disappoint! My boyfriend got the Huli Huli Chicken and I got the Moloki Chicken. Just for the classic the portions were very nice and filling. Also what I really appreciated is the staff and manager!! I have a dye allergy and can't have artificial red, blue, yellow, or caramel color which is found in most things! But when I asked them if their moloki chicken had any dye, the manager brought out the whole container so that i could check it! Most places just say it does without checking which I'm really glad this place didn't. I was so happy to see that it didn't contain any artificial coloring and the chicken was so tender and it had a very nice sweet and baby kick to it. Unfortunately the strawberry dole had caramel color in it but the pineapple dole was amazing! We loved how creamy and strong the flavor was! Will definitely be coming back to try...
