I'll begin with the good. It was a busy Saturday night in Oxford and we only had to wait about 15 minutes for a seat. We got some drinks at the bar. The bar service was decent and the drinks were good. After that, our experience starts to go down hill... we get seated and our waitress takes our order. I'm a vegetarian who isn't fond of mushrooms so when I order the roasted veggie sandwhich I asked for no mushrooms. She tells me they can't do that. I'm a little annoyed and in my head question how "fresh" the food is but since I'm hungry and easy going I just say, " that's fine, I can pick them out". We also ordered 2 appetizers (because it's Saturday, we hadn't been out on the weekend in a while and we were just feeling a little wild). Anyway, we waited and waited for our appetizers for what seemed like a lifetime (really about 30-40 min) and they never came. I kept trying to eye our waitress in the hopes that she'll see me and come over to ask if we needed anything. I keep looking at her and we finally make eye contact but she never comes over. At this point hanger starts to set in. I can feel my blood pressure start to rise and my husband and I agree that after going this long without our appetizers, we probably won't see them until our dinner comes out. A few minutes pass and our dinner comes, but no appetizers! I was mad. Our waitress comes and asks if we need anything. Uh yeahhhhh, our appetizers we orderd. She says she forgot to put them in and assured us they will not be on our bill- no s*it!! She said she felt bad, but feeling bad won't turn back time and allow you to put in our order correctly I think to myself. But mistakes happen so I decide to forgive her. Just as I forgive her I find a big chunk of chicken(or some kind of meat) in my veggie sandwhich!! I decide it's not even worth the effort to complain about that because I just wanted to eat and get the heck out of there. So we sat and ate our average tasting, overpriced dinner and ask for the bill which is then given to us with another half ass apology. I expected something to be knocked off our bill because of her incompetence, but nope. Long story short, we are never going back! Hopefully others will have a better...
Read moreThis restaurant has great potential, but falls short due to the customer service, inaccurate online information, and inconsistent cuisine. We visited on two occasions: once for dinner and once for a beer and pretzel.
On the positive side, the selection of authentic German beer on tap is IMPRESSIVE and the DELICIOUS traditional pretzel was served HOT and with both German mustard AND tasty pretzel cheese. It was HUGE and covered in delicious salt crystals, similar to those I've had at Oktoberfest in Munich.
On the negative side, I was hoping to order the flight of German wheat beers advertised on the online menu and it was not available. Moreover, the bartender was unable to accommodate me because they are apparently very rigid with the inventory control, making it impossible to serve flights of beer that are not listed in the system. There are many ways of resolving this with a little ingenuity. I STRONGLY encourage you to at least allow customers to order what is listed online. Ideally, with such an incredible selection of quality beers on tap, customers should have the option of creating their own flight. My wife and daughter were also not impressed with the food or service when they had dinner.
Because of the aforementioned inconveniences, we decided against having my family birthday brunch there, though we did enjoy sharing a birthday pretzel to go. With a few simple improvements, this restaurant could provide a considerably better customer experience. I was so hoping to be impressed, as I have loved German food and beer ever since I...
Read moreWhat a gem of a place, especially if you like beer or German food. I personally grew up around a lot of German culture, and learned the language at a young age, and this little basement feels like home in an odd way.
If you're not a drinker, the food is more than enough reason to come here. Their schnitzels are legitimately pretty authentic, and the pretzels are perfect.
I'm not kidding when I say that if you're not familiar with German food and nothing catches your eye, their burgers are great. Go visit for a burger and some beer, if nothing else.
On the topic of beer, there's legitimately nothing that rivals this place anywhere near us. The owner (who unfortunately passed away, I think, and his wife now runs the place) used to travel overseas to sample drafts, and import his favorites. That practice has made the beer menu worth coming for alone, even if you don't plan on eating. (You have to at least get a pretzel though, right?)
If the German beer menu is a little overwhelming, their descriptions of the beer in English is superb, and the wait staff is EXTREMELY patient and normally quite willing to discuss beer recommendations with you. I'm personally very fond of Paulaner Salvator, Andechs Dunkel Weißbier und Kostritzer Schwarzbier.
Fantastic place for a date night or...
