I was treated sooo badly by the staff and manager of this place, I had to take time to write an honest review for anyone thinking to go there. As the server said to me when I asked him about my uni course, which was 30 minutes late in the making, "there are problems here with the operation". Then after that, I ordered an order of toro sashimi. He told me that it would be AT LEAST another 30 minutes for each additional course. I left a ton of time for dinner, but because it was so slow, I literally didn't have enough time to wait another hour for two more simple courses of sushi. Being in Vegas and gambling, the bill was the last thing on my mind, but I did want to register my concerns with the manager. I actually wanted to try to offer them some help understanding how they could improve. There was a custome sitting next to me and the manager pretty much told me, too bad and was extremely rude. This amazed me... and the other customer who had purchased a 700.00 bottle of premium sake. I asked for the general manager of the operation. I own a business and if something like this happened at my company, I'd want to know. After waiting next to the door for about 15 minutes or so, the other customer offered me a glass of sake. I texted my friend that I'd be a few minutes late. The General Manager was anything but apologetic and gave me the attitude of a 2 year old. So now, I'm actually annoyed. He asked me what I would consider a fair deduction off the bill. I told him "initially I didn't want a deduction, but after the horrible way I was treated by management for offering a valid complaint, I didn't think the meal had any value whatsoever." Then I said - With that in mind I'll pay the entire bill or whatever you decide....... I found the experience so negative that to me it wasn't worth a penny" So he came back with a 100.00 credit on a 500.00 bill, which I told him was inadequate, but it wasn't about the money. I stressed to him and the other staff repeatedly that my main concern was to bring an issue to their attention. At no point did anyone offer any apology or even recognition that there was an issue. What the Manager did next was shocking... and I have a witness who was a high roller at the casino who saw and heard the entire thing. The manager called the Casino security office and told them that I tried to leave without paying them and that I had been yelling, swearing and threatening them. The other customer denies that any of that is true. The security guy tells me that I'm not banned, but that for the time being I had to leave. I asked the security manager to talk to the other customer and they refused. Then he said it was a crime in Vegas to leave without paying. I showed him my receipt, paid with AMEX, and he shrugged his shoulders. I know that all of this is impossible to read and believe. Trust me, it's all true. So if you go to Mizumi, here are the things to know. The service is extremely slow....to the point that the servers are telling customers there's a huge problem. The sushi is average. Nobu is ten times better. Plus they'd never even consider doing all the other stuff. Do NOT complain or they will have you tossed out. Just pay the bill and review them later. The main manager is seemingly a liar and the security office at the Wynn must be run by an idiot. I'm a wealthy, seasoned traveler for over 30 years and a high roller at various casinos. I've never in my life been asked to leave a place for any reason, let alone no reason. My concern for the Wynn is that this reflects upon the hotel management. Had the security manager been willing to speak to the customers who witnessed the entire thing, they would have found out that the Restaurant manager simply lied to them to punish me for...
Read moreMizumi is a wonderful experience, with effusive service, opulent décor, and solid riffs on modern classic dishes that other restaurants have made famous.
Put another way, if you've dined at Nobu or Zuma before, this is old hat.
On my experience at Mizumi, I started with sushi, specifically the Yellowtail Sashimi and Jalapeño Gelée. Very thinly-sliced yellowtail were dressed with crispy onion, negi, cilantro oil, and ponzu sauce, resulting in intense onion-y, spicy, and sweet flavors, while the oil created a tongue-feel of a lightly-seared piece of bacon, and the onions provided a much-appreciated crunch.
I then moved on to nigiri: 2 pieces of the Sweet Shrimp nigiri (i.e., spot prawns) from the cold waters of Alaska. The prawns featured a delicate, sweet flavor and setup my next 2 pieces very nicely: the rich Chūtoro nigiri. As you likely know, Chūtoro is a mixture of akami (meaty tuna) and otoro (fatty tuna belly), making for a well-marbled tasty, sweet, and tender cut of tuna fish. Mizumi's chūtoro is flown in fresh from Spain and has the "melty" mouthfeel of a premium piece of otoro, but with more of an actual tuna flavor.
Served with my sushi was a Lobster Miso Soup which contained chunks of lobster, tofu, nameko mushrooms, seaweed, green onions, and mitsuba. I was pleasantly surprised by the considerable amount of lobster in the soup. Lobster and butter will always be everyone's favorite classic pairing, but the complementary nature of miso and lobster should not be underestimated -- I'd choose Mizumi's lobster miso soup over most lobster bisques I've had.
The Whole-Grilled Bone Marrow may have been the highlight of my dinner at Mizumi. Glazed with a sweet yakitori sauce, I expected the bone marrow to have a smokiness one would associate with yakitori, but it did not, and that was alright. It was sweet, rich, sticky, and satisfying, pairing well with the brioche croutons. It was sweet enough that it could be eaten for dessert.
After I slurped down my bone marrow, my entrée arrived, the Baked Sweet Miso Marinated Black Cod, listed on the menu as containing only 430 calories. This is the dish that made Nobu famous. Mizumi's preparation is a little bit cleaner in that it is not served with the reduced miso sauce marinade that Nobu's black cod is glazed with. Instead, a variety of different sweet pickles are served aside the fish. This allows the eater to exert more control over how sweet each bite is. I would rate the Mizumi rendition of miso-marinated black cod to be about on par with Nobu's and Zuma's version.
All said, Mizumi delivered a fine meal from a high-end restaurant located in one of Las Vegas's premier casino resort hotels, pretty much on par with what I expected. Although my meal rarely thrilled, at no point did...
