Sometimes, the best culinary discoveries are the ones you stumble upon, especially when a vibrant Instagram feed has planted the seed. Sayulitas, a small but mighty eatery, had been on my radar, and when a craving for something truly substantial struck in Las Vegas, my travel companion and I made the pilgrimage across the street. What we found was a place that promises, and delivers, an experience far beyond your typical fast-casual joint.
Atmosphere and Setting
Located in a modest, no-frills space, Sayulitas is a tiny gem that makes up for its lack of size with an explosion of color and character. The interior is small, and depending on the time of day, snagging a seat can be a bit of a challenge. While it is certainly not a place for a long, leisurely dinner, the vibrant, clean, and cheerful setting sets a pleasant stage for a quick, satisfying meal. This is a hole-in-the-wall in the best possible sense: it is unassuming on the outside but bursting with flavor and personality within.
Food and Drinks
Now, let's talk about the main event: the food. This is where Sayulitas truly shines. The menu is a playground of unique and intriguing combinations, particularly the Mexican-Filipino fusion that is their specialty. My first visit was dedicated to conquering the Sayulitas Burrito, a legend in its own right. The most striking thing about these burritos is their sheer size. They are massive, easily large enough to feed a small army or, more realistically, provide several meals for one person. This is not just a meal; it is an event, a delightful, caloric splurge that demands your full attention. The flavors are a triumph, a rich tapestry of spices and textures that are anything but boring. The bacon-wrapped or cheese-wrapped options are a testament to their dedication to delicious, if dangerous, indulgence.
We were so impressed that we returned on our way out of town to try the Tapsilog Burrito. This one, too, was a masterpiece of savory fillings and balanced seasoning, leaving us with a final, fond memory of our culinary adventure. For those looking for a lighter, though still substantial, option, the salads are a fantastic choice. They are huge and packed with protein, making them a great way to enjoy the rich flavors without the carb-heavy commitment of the burrito. The flavors are simply delicious and truly stand out. A major highlight is the self-service salsa bar, which allows you to customize your flavor and heat level to your exact preference.
However, a word of caution: the generosity of the portions can be a double-edged sword. Around the 30% mark, the sheer size of the burrito can become a bit overwhelming, and the initial excitement can give way to a sense of being overly full. The flavors, while fantastic, can become a bit monotonous after a while, so it is probably best not to go it alone or to order for more than you can handle.
Service and Value
The service at Sayulitas was a genuine pleasure. The staff was incredibly helpful and kind, making our experience seamless and welcoming. They were happy to answer questions and were clearly invested in ensuring we had a great meal. In terms of value, the food is a steal. While the burritos might seem a little pricey at first, when you consider that one could last you for a few meals, the cost per serving is incredibly low. This is a place where you are not just buying a meal, but an experience and a serious amount of food. The fact that they are open late is another huge plus, making it a perfect post-show or late-night stop in Vegas.
Verdict
Sayulitas is a definite must-try in Las Vegas, especially for anyone with a hearty appetite and a love for unique flavor combinations. The massive, flavor-packed burritos, with their Mexican-Filipino fusion, are a true culinary highlight. While the drink prices are a low point and the portions are so large they could be a challenge, the overall quality, service, and value of the food make it a worthwhile destination. Just be sure to bring a friend, or an appetite that is ready for a glorious,...
Read moreOh, yeah. I've been waiting to come to Vegas just so I could try one of their burritos. Every time I see them on Instagram, they are posting some off the wall, mouth watering greatness and I haven't been able to tey them because I was in Northern California. But then we came out for a tournament and I made a beeline there after the games. Then I saw the price and walked right back out.
My mind wasn't ready, you see. It saw the price and panicked. "Nothing can make a burrito that good" , my mind said. "I've never paid $29 for a burrito, and I won't start now." So I left.
But the heart wants what it wants, and I found myself walking through their door again today. The line was short, but I had enough time to see other customers dining happily, commenting on how one burrito was big enough to FEED FOUR PEOPLE.
Come again?
I took a look at the menu and decided that I would get myself the lumpia burrito, and for the three teenage basketball players and my wife, I would get the Mecca, which is the $29 burrito.
Oh, my goodness. They are worth it.
The lumpia burrito, which they claim is regular size, is the size of a loaf of bread. We aren't talking Old Spaghetti Factory loafs, either. Wonder bread. Home pride. Generic... Loaf... Of bread. I don't know a lot of bread brands. But that burrito was huge, and less than half of it was enough to make me question my worth as a burrito lover, and also make me want to tell my mama about what I had found.
The crazy thing is that the Mecca WAS TWICE THE SIZE OF THE LUMPIA BURRITO. I am 6'1 and it is the length and girth of my forearm. The teenagers whimpered at the sight, even though the restaurant was kind enough to cut it into fours. My wife looked at her piece and said that she would put it in the refrigerator for later, which meant that she was impressed but terrified.
The sauces are dope. The food is major. The location is hole in the wall chic. There is hardly room to breathe, let alone sit down.
You won't care. The food tastes like alchemy, and you can literally cater a church dinner with three of these things....
Read moreLove the food and the concept. I have a policy of docking one star when the pricing structure is unclear or I feel that the prices are higher than is reasonable. This place I encountered both of these issues but the food was so good that I'm still giving 4 stars. The confusion in price comes from the fact that per the menu, my burrito was supposed to cost $20-$21 and somehow it was nearly $30. Apparently this was because I listed the items I wanted on it and even though they were the items that were supposed to come on it they counted it as a custom order? I mostly did it to make sure I didn't get stuff I didn't want on it but I guess I'll know better next time. I'm happy to pay extra to get my burrito wrapped in bacon but aside from that, it was the same size and fillings I used to get at nearly every burrito joint for around $5, so $30 is a lot to swallow. I also grabbed a quesadilla to bring home to my wife. It was not that long ago that those cost less than $10 and somehow this one was over $20 for the exact same size and ingredients I used to pay $7 for elsewhere.
Those complaints aside, the food was pretty spectacular. the quality and flavors were on point and the sizes were large. The service was super friendly and despite how busy they were, they got us through the live and served in a very reasonable amount of time. Maybe the upcharge is because this is technically on the strip, but it was at the far south end and not really where the crowds are. Either way, I'll absolutely be back but nowhere near as often as I would be if the prices were more realistic...
