A Genuine Surprise Stop on Our Way Back From NYC

We were on our way home from NYC, planning to wash the car before calling it a day, when we drove past Pennsville Custard Stand. Right before it, we passed what can only be described as a crack den (a rundown motel with a few guys doing the crack dance), and honestly, we didn’t expect much more down the road.

Then suddenly, we see this beautiful little hole-in-the-wall shack that completely caught us off guard. Not only were the prices super reasonable, but the service was lightning fast — in and out like that.

It was clearly a regular local spot too. We saw a dad just casually enjoying his custard outside his truck, like this was his go-to ritual, while my wife and I enjoyed ours. It had this wholesome, small-town vibe that made the whole stop feel unexpectedly special.

If you’re ever passing through, don’t sleep on this place....

I don't get to Pennsville as much as I used to but was there yesterday afternoon and as I passed the farm market I remembered I wanted to try to get some cucumbers to make some pickles with. When they didn't have what I wanted I noticed the sign in front of the custard stand offering pumpkin ice cream so I just had to grab some since I like most things pumpkin. I was worried that it might have just been vanilla ice cream with food coloring and pumpkin spice but was pleased to taste the actual pumpkin in the ice cream. I have also over the years tried some of their other special flavors and have never had a bad one yet. We went here after a walk at the Riverview Beach Park. We each got a small 2 scoop waffle cone. Total was $9 and change. We tried the homemade peach and the homemade apple pie ice creams. Each was delicious. The apple pie was a vanilla base with yummy apple pieces, and a slight cinnamon crust taste. Not sure if there were crust pieces in it or not honestly. The peach ice cream was a peach base with pieces of real fruit. Customer service was polite and friendly. Place had a high turn over while we ate our treats at available shaded picnic tables. Definitely a popular spot; however, no wait to be helped when we got in line. Highly recommend...
