Major's is a mini mart with a closely guarded secret: they make the best, and some of the cheapest, hoagies in Philadelphia. Word has spread, partly as the result of an episode of Parking Wars that featured Major's, so at lunchtime be prepared for a line.
Despite the long line, the hoagie ninjas behind the deli counter churn the sandwiches out at a rapid pace...providing no-one breaks the system. Don't be one of those people, be prepared. It's very simple: When the lady yells "next", tell her the protein, type of bread and whether you want cheese and mayo. Don't try to explain anything else, she's not interested. She honestly doesn't care about your requirements for pickles, peppers or tomatoes. Keep your mouth shut.
Only when your sandwich skeleton is passed on to the other lady should you start with all the faffing about lettuce and oil etc. If you have any sense you'll just say "Everything" and leave it up to the expert.
In return for compliance you will be given a beautiful, fresh, perfectly formed hoagie. The picture I've included shows what I mean. When you look at it, keep in mind that it is a small hoagie and cost me $2.75! Tell me that's not an absolute bargain.
Major's is a an essential part of the local community. On the few occasions it has had to close for a few days, East Falls collapses into pandemonium.
TL;DR: Fantastic enterprise selling...

Yet, if I want a hoagie, I know where to go. Because Major's is probably the freshest, cheapest, and best hoagie you can find. It's gotten to the point where I, a hoagie-hater, will actually crave one of their hoagies. That's saying something.
And yes it's small. And yes, there is a line for a hoagie at 2:30PM on a random Monday (call ahead!) And yes, the staff can range from mildly disinterested to seeming like they want to curse you out. Be nice, normally you will get what you want.
But everything is fresh. The lettuce? Crispy and fresh. The meat? It's sliced in front of you and tastes as good as cold cuts can. The tomato's? They are basically shining. Guys, I've worked in high end, well known restaurants where the lettuce was taught in and semi-wilting on their $20 sandwiches.
You really can't beat it. A (basic) turkey hoagie with whatever you want is $3.75 (occassionally they will sharpie on $4.25 and then that's the price, bit still) and very little is more expensive then that. Honestly, it would be hard to find the equal ingredients in the grocery store (high quality roll, high quality meat, fresh lettuce/onion/tomato/peppers, etc) for less then $4. And their large hoagies are huge and...
Read moreOkay so i just went to get my nephew a hoagie for his class trip and the Filipino lady act like she had a attitude and she didn't want to serve me. She kept looking at the clock and rolling her eyes and shaking her head so i ask her was there a problem and she over talk me with a attitude what you want. So i ask her again was there a problem because you act like you don't want to serve me she responds with no I'm just not feeling well she looked fine before i walk to the back she just didn't want to serve me and if it was to early then you shouldn't open until you fully have everything together. I've been running across a lot of Filipinos who have attitudes and to find out lot of the Filipinos i work with said in there country they don't like black people. This happened today as I'm writing this review. I'm so glad that lady gave me attitude because that just showed me not to come here anymore i rather spend my money somewhere else and be treated with respect than to spend my money with someone who does not have good customer service. I'll go back to my regular place by 62 market Street the Chinese people make better hoagies anyway and there very nice...
