From the moment we stepped through the doors of Mellow Mushroom Phoenix, the energy was infectious—and our server, Jenna, was at the heart of it. My fiancé and I were greeted with warm smiles and a genuine “Welcome!” that immediately set the tone for an unforgettable evening. With its kaleidoscope of mural-clad walls, eclectic lighting fixtures, and cozy booths tucked beneath tie-dye canopies, the restaurant felt like an art installation you could both dine in and admire—BTW we were on mushrooms.
Jenna introduced herself within seconds of us being seated, offering crisp menus and a friendly rundown of the house specials. Her enthusiasm for Mellow Mushroom’s unique creations was palpable as she described the “Holy Shiitake Pie,” loaded with savory mushrooms and pesto drizzle, and the “Kosmic Karma,” a medley of red sauce, mozzarella, and Muenster that somehow tasted like sunshine on a plate. When we hesitated between the two, she didn’t just point and walk away—she leaned in, sharing her personal preference (Holy Shiitake for an earthy punch!), and even offered a half-and-half option so we could experience both without missing a beat.
While we waited for our pizza, Jenna charmed us with her knowledge of the drink menu. She recommended the “Funky Monkey,” a tropical concoction of rum, banana liqueur, and pineapple juice, assuring us it was the perfect companion to our pies. Her timing was impeccable: our drinks arrived just as we settled into our first sips, and she checked back moments later to ensure they were shaken, stirred, and sipped to perfection.
When our pizzas arrived, fresh from the wood-fired oven, they looked like edible masterpieces. The Holy Shiitake’s crust was blistered and pillowy, the pesto glistening like emerald ribbons across the golden cheese. Every bite was a revelation—each mushroom had been roasted to tender perfection, and the nutty pesto tied it all together in an explosion of umami. Meanwhile, the Kosmic Karma’s rich, savory sweetness was the perfect counterpoint, and we found ourselves alternating slices between the two, trying to decide which one we loved more.
Throughout the meal, Jenna wove through the dining room like a conductor leading a symphony, striking the perfect balance of attentive and unobtrusive. She refilled our drinks seamlessly, discreetly cleared empty plates, and her timing for the dessert menu drop was impeccable. When she suggested the “Chocolate Calavera” brownie—warm, fudgy, and drizzled with raspberry sauce—we knew we were in for something special. And, of course, she was right.
In short, if you find yourself in Phoenix and craving more than just pizza—if you want an experience that combines art, community, and exceptional hospitality—seek out Mellow Mushroom and ask for Jenna. She’ll guide you through the menu with expertise, brighten your evening with her warmth, and ensure you leave already dreaming of your next visit. Jenna didn’t just serve us dinner; she crafted an evening we won’t soon forget. Highly, highly recommended!

Read moreLet me Begin by saying I used to love mellow mushroom in Atlanta in the 1980s. As far as Pizza goes this is not a place I would ever return to for a pizza or calzone. I gave it two stars only because the bar had some great beers on tap.
Being from New Jersey and New York with the fortunate experience of living in Italy I'm a fan of traditional Italian pizza. This is not in that category.
I ordered a mushroom pizza and I deliberately ask the waiter to make sure that the crust was not burnt. He indicated that the pizzas are cooked for 7 minutes in some sort of automated oven. Well sure enough the pizza came with the entire bottom of the crust burnt. When he came over to the table he didn't ask if we enjoyed the pizza but rather stated the pizzas wonderful isn't it? And I indicated to him that the pizza was burnt. He offered to make a free small pizza which I declined because if it stays in the oven for the same automated 7 minutes it would come out the same.
The pizza was very oily and probably the worst part was the dough was very very dry.
We also ordered a calzone to sample. This was not burnt but it was the same dry dough. The ingredients were definitely fresh and quite good but I'm not sure what the point is if the dough is not very good.
The atmosphere of the restaurant when you first walk in looks very cool and fun. However it is so loud from people's talking and the high ceilings with probably a metal or concrete roof that it's impossible to have a conversation with your table mates.
As mentioned the bar had a great selection of beers, but this is not a place to have a beer and talk with a friend because as stated it's just too loud in the restaurant.
A huge disappointment for pizza place that used to be great when it was simple. I definitely would not return nor recommend...
Read moreOur Server was fine, but hardly came by to fill our water glasses. We ordered "The Great White," pizza, chicken sandwich, burger, and mushroom soup. As long as it took for us to get our food, the soup was barely warm! The pizza and chicken sandwich were both good. However, the burger lacked flavor, and needed seasoning of some kind. The potatoes also lacked flavor, and were dried out or just bland. The soup came in a huge bowl, which made no sense at all since there was only about less than a cup full. It was just okay. ...We also ordered two customized burgers 'to go,' for another party. His order was $35!! Yet when we delivered it to him, none of the condiments were in his boxes! The burgers also were supposed to have caramelized onions, mushrooms and swiss, and one with blue cheese. They only had the cheese on them!! The burger patties had black crusty char or something from the grill. He also asked for lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles on the side. Not one item was inside the container!! The potatoes, same as described above, but more overcooked!! Mind you, we live all the way in Surprise, and by the time he got off from work to go home, and eat his food, he was completely disappointed and beyond words!! He's a Hospitality Major, so he was beyond disbelief that two burger meals for $35 could be so inedible, and such lack of flavor! I didn't even know this about both his meals until the next day! I only asked because I saw them uneatened in their containers, so I asked.
So, in other words, I will never order anything from here again. Unless, maybe, we are in the area, we MIGHT just get pizza or apps, which I have had before, but that will be a long...
