I just came back from lunching here with a co-worker. Our overall thought is that the food is good but the price is too high for the amount of food that you receive. I ordered ackee & salt fish which implies that there should be salt fish in the dish! Not a few flakes and a flavor suggestive of fish. I paid $15 for it and basically had onions, a little ackee, a piece of pepper and a whole bunch of cheap carbs (yam, two dough dumplings, banana) instead of serving salt fish. I’ve made ackee & salt fish so I know what it’s supposed to look like. I’ve had better Jamaican food with better portion sizes elsewhere and my colleague felt the same. Also, the rum cake is advertised as $6 but is actually $7.50! Finally, this is the second time that I have gone there and they didn’t have jerk chicken ready either time. I paid $33 and the only meat that I got was in the beef patty. I cannot recommend this place.
Updated 4/8/25: Management kindly offered to make things right and this time when I went in I had brown stew chicken (ackee & saltfish wasn't available). The manager was very nice when we discussed the matter. She really wanted to make sure that she was providing value for the money, which was greatly appreciated. The brown stew chicken was outstanding! See the picture below but note that I had already started eating it as there was more in the meal. I want to thank management for addressing the issue and providing excellent customer service as well as...
Read moreThey don’t have their menu. They have what they have / cooked that day. I like that. A very human restaurant.
I’ve eaten at every “gem” I’ve heard about downtown. Not sure if anything comes close to this. People rave about sree’s, but she gives out tortillas instead of naan. Oftentimes Madonna’s chicken has spine bits in it when they give it to you. That arepas place under the car garage is like 50% too expensive. Baebae’s isn’t worth the price whatsoever. This Caribbean place is not only cheaper than the average Caribbean place in Pittsburgh, it’s better than most too. The cost is also significantly lower than the average restaurant downtown, especially for the size of the meal you get.
I paid $14 (in market square) for some well-spiced and charred jerk chicken, slightly spicy pickled cabbage, peas and rice. The chef told me the reason jerk chicken tastes different here is we don’t have bay leaf trees or other spice trees to use in the grill. The peas and rice were starchy and fortifying but not gummy, some of the best I’ve had.
I’m not sure if there’s a better restaurant downtown, it’s surprisingly dead, and I’ve been wondering if I should even leave this review because I don’t want the spot to blow up.
The chef gave me some pea / bean soup before I...
Read moreAuthentic Jamaican food with a vibrant blend of flavors, influenced by indigenous, African, European, and Asian culinary traditions. The food had bold seasonings, hearty stews, and the use of fresh tropical ingredients like coconut, breadfruit, and plantains. Key elements included the use of Scotch bonnet peppers, allspice (pimento), and a variety of spices and herbs. Everything blended so well, it's heavenly 👌🏿👌🏿 The lines were long, The waiting was long, The waiting was worth it 👌🏿 The BEST part was the hospitality of the ladies behind the magic in the kitchen. I ordered the beef patties and the chicken patties (be ready to mess your clothes 😍😂) they were gone in seconds, I went back for more. I also ordered oxtails and jerk chicken, rice and beans and the cabbage 💯💯💯. I am surprised that Pittsburgh is BLESSED with such a golden gem. I am going back, I am now a regular customer, I wish they could open more branches because the place is too small. So far, my favorite Jamaican food I...
